Enterovirus May Have Caused Maryland Meningitis Outbreak
U.S. News ^ | Oct. 30, 2014 | 6:12 p.m. EDT | Kimberly Leonard

A meningitis outbreak at the University of Maryland may be related to another virus that has swept across the country during recent months, though further testing is being conducted to determine the possibility.

If the tests are positive, it would mean that yet another manifestation of enterovirus-68 has occurred.

In Maryland, the state public health lab is conducting a broad range of testing on specimens submitted to the agency, state epidemiologist Dr. David Blythe says. Agency officials would not specify whether testing for EV-68 was occurring and did not confirm whether samples had been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. County health officials say that testing will occur at either the state level or be performed by the CDC.

Five viral meningitis cases at the University of Maryland were confirmed as having been caused by an enterovirus, according to the University Health Center, and it's possible the EV-68 strain is causing the outbreak at the school, where more than 20 students have been infected. However, there are more than 100 enterovirus strains that also could be responsible.

So far, only one instance of the specific meningitis-enterovirus-68 match has been confirmed recently in the U.S. In Connecticut, an elementary school student tested positive Thursday for both viral meningitis and EV-68.

The enterovirus comes from Central America. Along with TB and other diseases they are spreading rapidly.

For reasons that remain unclear, University of Maryland officials say they will not know the particular strain of enterovirus behind the meningitis cases for weeks, according to an email from the University Health Center.

Of course, no results will be forthcoming until after next Tuesday, and they might not be available until after any necessary runoffs in Louisiana or Georgia.

The enterovirus comes from Central America.

There is no evidence of that.

The CDC and the various state health agencies won’t be able to confirm anything until after the election.

I think what we can say is there has been no investigation by the CDC or other government health agency to determine just why we have this sudden outbreak in 46 states of a virus rarely seen in the US since it first appeared in 1962.

Have any of the illegal children entrants from Central America been tested for this virus? Were they screened at the border? Are you aware of any investigative work being done to determine why this outbreak has occurred?

"There is no evidence of that."

Yes there is.

The enterovirus was brought to the U.S. by the current wave of illegal immigrants. The disease was almost nonexistent in the U.S. prior to recently when unscreened illegals were moved throughout the U.S. by the Obama Administration.

While there have been smaller outbreaks in the psat (here and abroad), enterovirus D-68 is rarely seen anywhere.

See my previous comment. Enterovirus D-68 was identified back in the 60s, and has rarely been seen anywhere prior to the current outbreak. Not here (though there have been smaller outbreaks), not in Central America, not anywhere.

Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your......

(Since all records of obama's past were lost in a tragic boating accident and fire, no one can be certain that the guy in the red circle isn't him...)

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

It's damned well being seen now, in 46 of 50 states. And it does exist in Central American? A study found it in 3% of children tested.

Again, are you aware of any effort by our government's health agencies to determine why this sudden and widespread outbreak. One would think this outbreak would be the top priority of the so-called Center for Disease Control. But not a word about a virus that has been spreading for several months now, other than one weasel worded spiel of BS.

Also over the past month my wife’s doctor diagnosed her as having enterovirus, she was sick but is ok now... weeks later my kids and I all got hand foot and mouth disease which can be caused by a strain of enterovirus, that was much much worse. I had never heard of it until my kids got it. I spiked a high fever, hands, feet, and throat all broken out, hands where so swollen I couldn’t close them. Now over it, but all skin is pealing from my hands. Its great......

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

So you are saying that the current outbreak of enterovirus at the exact same time and place as unscreened, untested, illegal immigrants being dispersed into the general population is just a big coincidence.

Oh my, how could that possibly have happened?

Alright, what is your explanation for the sudden outbreak of enterovirus, TB and other diseases at exactly the same time illegals were brought into the U.S.

Here is an article that pretty well summarizes what’s been said about the spread of enterovirus 68 so far, including the weasel words of the CDC.

“And it does exist in Central American? A study found it in 3% of children tested”

That’s not what that study said. The study looked at children in Central America who presented with flu-like symptoms, and found that 3% of them had AN enterovirus, not that they had Enterovirus D-68 (indeed, most of the 3% had an Enterovirus A or B strain). That is not at all surprising, since enteroviruses in general are very common (here, in Central America, and pretty much everywhere else) and most strains cause flu-like symptoms. So, the fact that 3% of kids with flu-like symptoms had an enterovirus doesn’t tell us much of anything.
