Is it just because he was Minority leader?

Mitch has pull. he has so many chits owed him by other Senators and made so many promises to them about committee assignments and stuff that he is likely a shoe-in for ML easily

Technically, he doesn't. But from a practical perspective it might actually be the best option.
Depends on whether we can trust Cruz, Lee, Sessions, Paul (on some stuff) and some of the new Senators elected tonight. If I were Cruz, I'd get a coalition together, quietly go to McConnell and threaten to mount an ugly, ugly challenge to his leadership. Unless he came around and played ball.
Cruz has a really good track record (esp for being only 2 years in) for that sort of thing. Ref the gvt shutdown last year.
