Elderly man, 90, and two clergymen face jail time for feeding the homeless

A senior citizen and a couple of clergymen in Florida face up to two months in jail for feeding the homeless.

A group of volunteers with the non-profit charity Love Thy Neighbor in Broward County face up to a $500 fine and 60 days in jail because they were feeding the homeless last Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, the New Times reports.

World War II veteran Arnold Abbott, founder of the interfaith organization, and members of a local church were confronted by Fort Lauderdale police officers because they had reportedly been in violation of the new laws against food sharing — laws that were ironically enacted on Halloween, a night reserved for, well, sharing candy.

Trays of hot food intended to be distributed to the lines of homeless people on the street last weekend were instead thrown directly into the trash by the officers, who ordered Abbott to “drop that plate right now.” In total, four police cruisers and a half dozen uniformed cops arrived to the scene.

Abbott and two clergymen were subsequently issued citations and are due to appear in court in the coming weeks.

The new law comes on the heels of an announcement from the city in January that restrict camping, panhandling, food sharing and other “life sustaining” activities.

Not to be deterred, Abbott, who has been feeding the homeless for years, talked in the report about how his recent run-in with the law will change things.

I would not want a police force that chooses which laws to enforce and which laws to not enforce based on their opinion of the law.

And here I thought Communism preached "to each according to his needs."

To each, but ONLY from the government.

Guess they would arrest Jesus for sharing 5 loaves and 2 fish with the multitude.

Without a permit? Yes, they would.

But, hey, its a free country.

Why on earth would I bait a drunk to defecate on your business?

No I won’t “hear from you”.
And no you will not “help” the other poster on this thread do something.

A little advice... sometimes when you when you threaten to let someone “hear from you” or “help” someone do something, you might just bite off a little more than you can chew and that person is liable to ‘help’ you right back.

I can’t believe police would waste their time, resources and taxpayer money on people feeding the homeless.

I'm sorry? What about this do you not believe? They police state is going to be making money from the fines levied against these gentlemen. The police knew it was a completely safe activity on their part. It's easy and safe to harass law abiding citizens. A murderer or rapist on the other hand, is both more dangerous to the cops, and less profitable to the police state, because you can't make any money off of them. Hence the all out 4-car assault on these honest citizens.

When you see police enforcing laws like these, it just warms your heart towards them doesn't it? It really makes you want to support and assist them in doing such important work.

Plus the recipients can collect without making any lifestyle changes that are necessary for independence. In fact, the more degenerate, immoral, and irresponsible the choices, the greater the rewards.

Dems have a secure voter base.

“Just following orders” is not a good defense. Didn’t work for the Nazi’s after WWII. It will not work as you stand before the great throne and the Father of us all, asks for a accounting of your life.

Yes, it’s inherent in private charities that they would start requiring people to make lifestyle changes so that next month they won’t need as much help.

Leftists have a double reason to oppose this -
as you said, this makes them independent, non-socialist voters,
and, it “judges” their immoral behavior as wrong according to a default Christian standard.

Your property?

You have no right to impact the charity of others.

Help me any way you’d like to try.

C Columbus’ crew may have been right.
There is a drop off in the distance.

Maybe we have just about come full cycle.

The Brits exiled a good portion of their Violent Criminals to the ‘Colonies’ and throughout the ‘Empire’, wherever a ‘need’ may be. Remember, there was a time when the Sun Never Set on the British Empire.

The French had Devils Island.

The Russians had/have the beautiful vacation spot in Sunny Siberia.

Even we had Alcatraz.

Now we take Violent Criminals - usually after several ‘chances’- and put them in Country Club type prisons where there are ‘decent’ meals, weight rooms, health plans to ‘die’ for School and all the amenities that had been passed up by them earlier, - I will not even mention Gitmo.
Illegal aliens are filling our jails, eating up our Welfare, being a Pox on society and ‘we’ are wanting MORE to come here with whatever little maladies they may possess.

While the Honorable Vets are allowed to be cast aside.

Whenever a ‘group’ gets their panties in an uproar, they are ‘allowed’ to pillage, ransack and burn with the Police standing by and in some instances try to ‘discourage’ people from protecting their property from the thugs.

Now we have ‘Do gooders and Clergy’ arrested for feeding the homeless.

Granted the reasoning behind NOT handing out ‘Free Food’ in public spaces is not good for the neighborhood etc is true.

BUT using that reasoning, does that mean when a ‘group’ torches and burns its own little corner of the world and LEO ‘allows’ them to do it, that it is for the Good?

I am sure the “Founding Dads” are looking down at us or up and in the words of many a great philosopher— are scratching their heads and saying—

“WTF????? Where did we go wrong?
We let Ben go to far with his little sayings.
I knew no good would come out of those little gadgets and all that Kite Flying.
Sienfeld is right, it is a Bizzaro World”.

I can just see it now. Jesus Christ comes to earth again, and is about to feed 5000 with loaves, and fishes, and the police come and arrest him.

Obviously those Christians were violating secular humanist laws of feeding people that the government would rather have eat from food stamps or die of malnutrition. (only a little sarcasm)
