The New York City doctor who is being treated for Ebola has been playing the banjo and riding an exercise bike in his hospital room.

A spokeswoman for the city Health and Hospitals Corporation says Dr. Craig Spencer requested the banjo and bike and has been using both.

The agency's president, Dr. Ram Raju, said Thursday that Spencer continues to be stable and is making good progress.

His future Mother-In-Law says; “He’s an avid little banjo player!”. I’m sure she’s referring to the musical instrument. My mind is working overtime reconstructing that sentence.

I always wished I could play the banjo, but given the survival rate for those contracting ebola I’ll just wait for something less lethal to come along.

Hey, it could have been worse -- an accordion or bongos!

I understand the young man’s joy at being alive and it’s a good thing that he’s regaining his fine motor skill control, but he still has to answer the question of why he felt it was permissable to lie about his activities violating quarantine until confronted with evidence otherwise? Credibility in a doctor, trustworthyness, is of paramount importance to the public and dear doctor seems to have violated that trust.

There is no actual evidence that he lied about his activities, just an anonymously sourced article in the NY Post. The report has not been corroborated, and has been disputed by the NY health authorities.

Ok, how about probably wasn’t completely forthcoming?

In an Oct 15 HuffPo article, CDC’s Friedan states that CDC guidelines require “ controlled movement. That can include a charter plane, that can include a car, but it does not include public transport.” This was confirmed in a CNN article of the next day where Friedan was further quoted: “We will from this moment forward ensure that no other individual who is being monitored for exposure undergoes travel in any way other than controlled movement.” These guidelines would have applied to Spencer.

A BusinessInsider/AP Oct 24 article quoted “health officials” as saying Spencer “also limited his direct contact with people.” But MyFoxNY reported on Oct 23 at 12:28pm that it was Uber that called the CDC to report Spencer’s use of his car service the day prior. CNN’s Vaughn Sterling tweeted out at 12:50pm on Oct 23 that Spencer didn’t self-quarantine (i.e., follow CDC guidelines). Two hours later CNN’s televised coverage confirms that Dr. Spencer self-quarantined to his apartment, but only after becoming fully symptomatic. (That is, after the infection progressed over three days’ ‘dragging’ and GI symptoms to a 100.3 fever. ) Three hours after MyFoxNY coverage, NBC offered up that Mayor DeBlasio was under the impression there were ‘very few’ contacts to track down - about the same time the NYDailyNews article released detailing Spencer’s activities and repeated use of public transport. Subsequently, WebMD reports that the city created “an emergency operations center ‘in Brooklyn’ to track down anyone who might have come into contact with Spencer”.
In a jump from ‘very few contacts’ to ‘anyone,’ LEO would very likely have been involved in discovery.

The Post broke their story citing law enforcement Oct 29. It will be interesting to see how Spencer responds to the NYPost and how he addresses his apparent disregard for CDC’s own guidelines.

Again, the journalists are doing a sloppy job.

Tenor or five-string? Clawhammer or Scruggs style?

America has a right to know.
