Ed Gillespie Concedes Virginia Senate Race to Mark Warner

Alexis Levinson

Republican Ed Gillespie conceded the Virginia Senate race Friday, declining to contest Democratic Sen. Mark Warner’s tight lead.

By Friday, Warner led by just 17,000 votes with 99 percent of precincts reporting. But with canvassing ongoing since Wednesday, media outlets had yet to call the race.

“If I believed there were any conceivable way we could find a viable path to win through a recount, I would fight,” Gillespie told supporters.

But, he said, “It would be wrong to put my fellow Virginians through a recount when, in my head and in my heart, I know that a change of outcome is not possible.”

Gillespie said that after “careful analysis” of the results, “I’ve concluded that the numbers just aren’t there.” That matched what Warner attorney Marc Elias told reporters on Wednesday, certain the incumbent would emerge victorious.

At a briefing with reporters Thursday, operatives from the National Republican Senatorial Committee expressed frustration that they had not had the resources to help push Gillespie over the edge.

“I’d always hoped that a super PAC would go in there and help out a little bit, and we just never got there,” NRSC Executive Director Rob Collins told reporters.

Warner won his second term in far different fashion than his first. After defeating former Gov. Jim Gilmore by more than 30 points, the popular former governor sneaked by in 2014 in a surprisingly close contest.

While he lost this one, Gillespie is now well-positioned to run for governor in 2017.

Not correct. This was all Sarvis’ fault. He accepted Democrat money knowing this would throw the race. He is a despicable piece of excrement willing to take a payoff and a dive.

D Winner M. Warner (i) 49.2% 1,071,283
R E. Gillespie 48.4% 1,054,556
L R. Sarvis 2.5% 53,396

Unfortunate. I’ll bet there was a lot of Democrat vote-cheating up in northern Virgina, where the DC commuters hang out. Would have been nice to get rid of Warner.
I’ve been ruminating about the issue of federal employees working in DC but voting in Va and Md.

There oughta be a law agin it.

I suggest that we enlarge the District of Columbia by a few miles on the side . . .

I’ve never bought the theory that Libertarians take votes from Republicans and not Democrats. Libertarians are nothing more than Democrats who pretend to have a few conservative principles at election time.

....

In the 2013 race for governor of Virginia, Democrat Terry McAuliffe beat Republican Ken Cuccinelli by 2 percentage points, 48 percent to 46 percent. Libertarian Robert Sarvis pulled almost 7 percent. Exit polls showed that Sarvis actually gave Cuccinelli a fighting chance: “An exit poll of Sarvis voters showed that they would have voted for McAuliffe by a two-to-one margin over Cucinelli.”

Sowell is one of my favorites.

Here’s an interesting read from a different perspective...

“...However, where does one find the funds?...”

Same place the Dems find them. Wherever possible, however possible, and whomever possible.

Did not realize it was that wide a gap...

I’m from Old School, though. You keep punching, even when your eyes are swollen shut, your nose is broken, and your teeth are loosen.

Then you headbutt...

“..Gillespie is positioning himself for a run at governor and doesn’t want the probable negative publicity..”

Got it; ExnewsExspook made that point too.

Still... it rankles to concede anything to those f***ing mongrels on the left.

The bitchslapping they took Tuesday was amazing. I kinda of just want it to keep going on and on...

Roger that. Makes sense from that perspective, if the Governor’s house is reachable.

I suppose we should be pretty glad with Tuesday’s results and move on from there.

Still... one more poke in their mongrel eyes would NOT be a bad thing, would it...

I'm with you. The Gillespie race was the only less than stellar news of the day; however, nobody expected him to be anywhere close, so it was a bit of a win in that regard. The important thing is that Warner is now in the minority. He's not going to like that very much and I will relish that thought.

Has anybody mentioned our brain damaged, RINO* emerituis JOHN Warner endorsing Warner?

I spent a couple of hours in the presence of John Warner a couple of weekends ago. Trust me when I tell you that there's nobody home there.

Yes, Sarvis the LINO has now won two consecutive statewide elections for the Democrats. I hope they’re paying him well.

Cochran? You mean Weekend at Bernie's?

Does Thad even know he was running, let alone that he won?

good start to a gubernatorial bid

Mark Obenshain might have a little something to say about that.

BTW, neither Warner would likely have ever won this seat had Obenshain's dad not been killed in a plane crash.
