Gorbachev warns world ‘on brink of new Cold War’

Tensions between the major powers have pushed the world closer to a new Cold War, former Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev said Saturday.

The 83-year-old accused the West, particularly the United States, of giving in to “triumphalism” after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the communist bloc a quarter century ago. The result, he said, could partly be seen in the inability of global powers to prevent or resolve conflicts in Yugoslavia, the Middle East and most recently Ukraine.

“The world is on the brink of a new Cold War. Some are even saying that it’s already begun,” Gorbachev said at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, close to the city's iconic Brandenburg Gate. …

I know Gorby isn't one to pay any mind to but is all this really necessary? Soros and Valerie have really messed things up. A lot of people are dying.

I think I recognize a teleological pattern consistent with Christian prophecy.

It does seems that the world doesn’t give a rip about the Russian economy. If capitalism looks like a failure to them they will return to their old ways. The U.S. talks about its economy as its most important issue. Is it any surprise that other countries want growing economies, too?

I am not defending aggression. But Ukraine could have worked with them on the economic issues instead of joining up with the EU.

Russia is not the type of country to be starved into submission. I can’t see sanctions doing anything but driving them back to cold war ways.

Putin’s been sending Russia back down that road. Forgot about all the nationalizations he engaged in?

The USSR would have disintegrated without him. Which was a good thing. The libs in the USA made sure we didn’t help them put the pieces back together, though.

I do think it is fair to give a country time for transition from one extreme form of government to a more rational one. Nothing like that is instant. They have to see the rewards along the way. Punishing them every step of the way is more likely to make them mad than it is to encourage them to see the benefits. Every country wants to feel like they are making their own choices rather than being forced by everyone else.

Some of it is just human nature and common sense.

If Putin’s goal has always been to lead Russia back to communism he easily could have done it by now. That does not mean it will never be his goal if it looks like the best way of survival.

If the only way to go is to do whatever Russia wants, what should Obama do?

a) Dismantle the Eastern European anti-missile shield (wait, eh already did that)
b) Send Putin a long love letter like he did the Ayatollah
c) Put NATO under control of a Russian general as a show of good faith
d) Continue to be decidely uninterested about Russia’s breach of the mid-range missile treaty
e) Something else

Cold war? Seams more like a hot war when you invade another country with a column of tanks.

Russia, and China to the south, don’t give one rats .... about economics. When the time comes they will revert back to their old Communist ways.

I do not see Russia and China as the same at all. But the U.S. has been much better to China than to Russia, it seems to me.

Why should Ukraine work with Russia on economic issues when they were invaded days after they overthrew the Russian puppet who had looted their country for a decade?

Because they are neighbors and spitting in Russia’s face is getting them nowhere.

Ukraine is kidding itself if it thinks EU isn’t going to use it, too. They are trading one overlord for another.

Ukraine is full of corruption and crime, too. Don’t make the mistake of considering them complete innocent victims.

The ridiculous thing is that often it seems like children are running these countries, children who do things more for spite than for the good of the people and advancement of their situation.

Spitting in Russia’s face?

Russia’s puppet government looted the country for more than a decade, and you think they should like colonialism.

I think that is a distorted, one-sided view.

They were invaded days or weeks after throwing off the puppet government that had thoroughly looted their country in Russia’s favor, they were never given any chance to rebuild or take a breath. It would take years of peace to repair the problems left by the puppets of Moscow.

You think days or weeks is enough time for them to repair the damage of Russian mismanagement and looting?

The evil tyrant in Moscow is the only one who should be blamed.

You are spot on again, ghost.

We are talking about same sort of mentality which led to WWII.

The difference is unlike Weimar Germany, Russia was never defeated militarily which adds to insult.

Even if all your adjectives are true (I don’t think so), Ukraine can’t move its real estate. It has to find a way to raise all ships or Russia will be a forever problem.

In my opinion Ukraine wants to blame Russia for all of its own failures. Ok if they are too proud to see their own faults, but I can’t see how aligning with EU is going to solve everything for them. So far it sure has not.
