Our Sunday USAToday paper had an article:
The
six mysteries everyone should read.
I'd read none of them!
So, I now have 5 to go; as I finished A Study in Scarlet last night.
And Then There Were None
The Moving Target
Strangers on a Train
A Great Deliverence
Never Let Me Go

But one writer is untouchable: Agatha Christie. She's too good.
With "And Then There Were None" and its opposite "Murder on tghe Orient Express", I had the feeling that Christie was just trying to come up with a weird twist that hadn't been done before. She hasn't been completely untouchable. My understanding is that a lot of her stories had alternate explanations for the crime written up by people who spend their time doing such things. If you simply want a clever puzzle to unravel, Christie and Doyle are top notch. If you want a great book with GREAT characters that can be reread, I would take Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe, with "Some Buried Caesar" as an exceptional representation of his work (note: Stout sometimes mails it in).
