Good enough for an Emmy, but not The Container Store
Yahoo News Video ^ | 11/11/2014 | Nicole Duignan

Deborah Copaken has an impressive resume. She is a bestselling author, and Emmy Award winning television producer, a former war zone photojournalist and a graduate of Harvard University.

Last year however, she found herself in a situation that would unsettle just about anyone. Her marriage was ending, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she lost her job-- along with her health insurance. Her COBRA benefits were terminated and she had to wait until the next enrollment period to apply for Obamacare. She needed an MRI to check the status of her cancer. Her bank account was empty. She needed a job.

Copaken recently shared her story in her piece on Cafe.com called, “How I got rejected from a job at the Container Store.”

She is now with a new online magazine. She says it is like a dream come true. All Praise Obama!

I predict it will be as popular as sunshine and air, but since no one has ever heard of it, probably be out of business in a few months.

The Container Store is a really good employer, paying their employees very well. And the thanks they get is an attack from this Harvard beeatch.

I know way too many people with the same story as hers, including in one case someone with cancer who lost their job just days before being diagnosed.

These stories are happening way too much in America, and I lay the blame right at the feet of Obama and the Democrats who forced Obamacare and every other job destroying piece of legislation or executive order down our throats the past 6 years.

Never be enough sore ones, nor will they be sufficiently sore to make me happy. Morons.

She sounds like a snob.

Being a producer (and winning an Emmy) is a different skill set than sales and customer service. Winning an Emmy doesn’t qualify her for anything outside of the entertainment industry.

Why would this person expect the Container Store to hire a middle-aged Harvard graduate for a retail position? No employer in their collective right mind would do that. There is absolutely no reason for the employer to risk the time and money involved in hiring a person who is likely to bolt for the next better opportunity. It would be a huge waste of time on the part of the employer.

I’m thinking she played up her writing and photo-journalism abilities and capped it all with a Harvard degree.

A greeter’s position, with health benefits attached and I’ll bet a lot of applicants with winning smiles and sorrier stories applied.

So much of the story is about “me, me” and not a lot about what she could offer a new employer.

So much left out of the story it’s hard to tell.

She’s not covered? The IRS will penalize her.

“She sounds like a snob....”
****************************************************************************************

She is indeed. As she says early in her pre-arranged interview .. “I am a member of the creative class”.

She very obviously applied for a “greeter” job simply so she would have something else to write in her story about “desperation”. This sheltered woman has absolutely no idea what real desperation is about IMHO.

Here’s something I guess I don’t understand.

Yes...the author got dealt one heck of a bad hand. There is no question of the fact that she needed a job to continue to live.

Quite frankly, there are a lot of people out there who would bolt their job for a better opportunity...conservatives included. The Container Store would be taking no bigger risk than they would in hiring anyone else.

So, this begs the question: What SHOULD have happened? Should she just give up and not apply anywhere? Should she starve? Die? I’m confused.

She sounds like a snob.

You forgot full of herself, (formerly) smug and (still) superior, claiming that she 'has no shame' looking squarely down her nose at the thought of stooping to such a menial job as being a 'greeter.'

Not to mention blaming everything on 'female overqualification syndrome.' Well, on behalf of employers everywhere, please accept my apologies for now falling down and worshiping at the feet of this Harvard-educated author, Emmy award winning, public speaking writer. How incredibly stupid of us all.

Among other things, she is guilty of presuming that nothing bad would ever happen to such a high-quality person as she thinks she is.

And it was obvious that all she wanted was to have some gravy train so she wouldn't have to deal with her own failures (in marriage and career - I wouldn't dream of blaming her for her cancer). But really, sh!t happens - and no one is promised a free ride in life. I emphasize with her troubles, but quit whining, quit blaming some convenient target, and deal with it.

Why be confused? No need for that, obviously.

This lady probably should have been exploring new self-employment possibilities, as it appears that she had already spent at least some time free-lancing in the past. Only this time, she needed to focus on providing something to the marketplace that people will actually pay for (i.e., not lectures, books, web content, etc.) Trying to sell that kind of stuff merely ends in you getting rejected by Container Store. And who needs that?

I was talking to my cousins husband yesterday and he works at a hospital that received their new MRI machine. The latest from GE. They needed to test it on people and he volunteered as he new how much it cost to get one.

He says he went thru many tests and they even gave him a disc with the images. He was fine.... however

He stated that some of those tested did find something wrong... and they were told.

I just got rejected from a job that I pretty much did when i was 26.

I had all of the qualifications, and I lived in the next town over.

I recently sold my own company, and I am now looking to get back into my old field. I know I am not going to make what I WAS making. I don’t have to. I indicated that on my resume and cover letter. I even indicated that I did not need insurance (my wife has the best insurance you’ll ever see!)

The “ageism” in the work place is just amazing. And the fact that you cannot get a real person to review a resume is just astounding. You have to make sure you plug in all of the right “code words” into your application or you will just get the nice rejection email (if you are lucky.)

I laughed out loud when I saw they were going to “continue their search with people more suitable.”

I think they meant I was too old and too white.

Some people put in a LOT of applications before they get a job, I don’t see them griping and moaning about every rejection.

How many other applications did she put in elsewhere? Will she be writing attack articles about all of those who did not hire her?
