Avoid killing and maiming if that is a choice. If that is not a choice preserve your life with anything at your disposal. You have a 3000 lbs weapon called your car. It has 200 or more horse power to be used. Use it if you must. Also realize that that 1/3 horsepower human outside your car can put 230 grains of lead in your head at 1100 feet per second.

The best gunfight and or car fight is the one that does not happen. Do not put yourself in areas where this can happen. If by fate you are there, use your 3000 lb weapon if you must but do not hesitate when in danger. Otherwise, you may die.

Proper technique:

Automatics: Turn steering wheel all the way to one side, place left foot on brake pedal, and give the gas 1/2 pedal, then release the brake pedal as you give it full gas. It three seconds there will be no one near you as you go round and round flinging them to the periphery. Aim to the exit and give it gas.

Sticks: Slight variation, turn wheel all the way, place in first gear, drop the clutch and floor the gas. The rest is the same.

Once safe, get out of the car and report it car jacked and stolen, asap.
