Milwaukee Aux. Bishop transferred to Gary, IN.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
The Holy Spirit at work.
Before he was selected as our Auxillary Bishop, he told us about his experience in our diocese sister parish in the Dominican Republic. Not a spanish speaker, in his first homily misprounced a word that had a negative slang expression. After that he was able to speak fluently, as the Holy Spirit was at work.
May God’s peace be with him as he meets his new challenge.
He sounds good. Episcopal appointments depend on the nuncio and the country’s bishops’ council (in this case, the USCCB). The latter make the recommendations and then the nuncio sends the short list to Rome. The Pope then picks among them.
Our episcopal appointments under JPII were pretty bad, and didn’t improve under Benedict until some of the younger auxiliary bishops got dioceses and began to influence the USCCB, and also until we had the nuncio Msgr. Pietro Sambi, who was orthodox and attentive to his duties. The nuncio who followed him has sent some bad or weak appointments to major sees since Pope Francis took over, but, oddly enough, some good appointments to some smaller dioceses.
So he didn’t have to learn Spanish it was just given to him?
/s
No, he had learned it, but a lot of priests speak “priest Spanish,” and I don’t know who the diocese hires to teach them, but the diocese should get a refund.
Granted, it’s harder for an adult to learn a second language to fluency (although it would have been easier for them if they had had to learn Latin first, but that’s off topic!). But I think probably his error made him realize that he had to train his ear a bit better and I think he probably worked at it harder.
I guess Pope Francis must hate Bishop Hying. First, Milwaukee. Now Gary.
In the Archdiocese of San Antonio whoever who is teaching the Spanish speaking Priests English should give refunds. Even many of those who have been here several years cannot read or pronounce English words correctly...it's like they never heard of a hard J or G.

Forty Days for Life: Bishop Donald Hying leads Eucharistic Procession in Milwaukee.
Well he’s Milwaukee born and raised and it was time for him to move on all kidding aside. Baptized my first two. Perfect time for him to move on as he was the #2 here after Listecki. Gary is getting a truly wonderful man.
He was just worried about their proper diet :-)
he said they needed to be very careful when looking at senos
No need to worry, they will be looking very carefully.
The first statement got a few politely-stifled smiles, but the second elicited loud snorts, some barks of laughter, and a flurry of giggling.
He had better be REALLY dedicated to the curch...
Bishop Hying’s Bio

Gary is my home diocese I hope this Bishop is better than the current Bishop. Way too liberal for me and many of my fellow Catholics here in NW Indiana.
