It’s simply part of doing business, whether it be looters or lava. That’s why you buy insurance.
Looters have their hands full which means they aren’t shooting at you.

Where do the insurance companies get the money to pay all the claims?

I don’t believe our business insurance covers riots. I would bet a lot of policies don’t.

“It’s simply part of doing business,....”

Yes, just another cost of doing business to add to the price consumers in Ferguson will pay for goods and services.

Since it is apparent that the police cannot provide business owners any security and protection of property from thieves and looters, the owners now have the choice of providing their own security at a cost. That cost will be passed on to the consumer through increased prices.

That is contingent on those businesses rebuilding and staying in Ferguson. Of course many will not return and rebuild. Either way, the cost of living in Ferguson just became more expensive for its people.

Insurance covers that which actuaries/statisticians can assign a probability. Insurance doesn't cover civil unrest because its probability estimate is unknown.

So that the lawless can have some barbarian fun, the lawful are ruined into homelessness.

Since firefighters did not or were unable to ameliorate the damage to businesses there may be a war exclusion clause in the policies which covers insurrection.
