WashPost on Ferguson: A Racist Town and 'Civil Rights' Landmark, Just Like Selma

By Tim Graham | November 28, 2014 | 8:49 AM EST

As proof the national media is trying to turn Ferguson into Selma – with no appreciation of a difference in racism between Alabama in the 1960s and St. Louis in 2014 – see Krissah Thompson’s Thanksgiving Day dissertation in The Washington Post. A headline was “To many, ‘Ferguson’ is shorthand for police mistreatment of blacks.”

"Though it has been less than four months since Michael Brown was killed, the town seems to have entered the pantheon of places that stand as metaphors. Ferguson’s symbolism now sits alongside Selma’s significance in the civil rights movement, Columbine as a symbol of teenage rage and gun violence, and Kent State’s historic link to anti-war protests. Those are places that have adjusted — some more smoothly than others — to their emblematic meaning."

In each case, the Meaning Factory is the national media, creating contemporary American history out of isolated community shootings. Longtime residents of Ferguson are resisting the idea that their town is synonymous with violent racism, wearing "I Love Ferguson" T-shirts, and so on, but they're apparently going to lose to the "social justice" movement that is being born:

“Here’s the lessons from Ferguson America,” wrote rocker and conservative activist Ted Nugent on his Facebook page. “Don’t let your kids grow up to be thugs who think they can steal, assault & attack cops as a way of life & badge of black (dis)honor.”

A little civilized behavior and gratitude and Michael Brown would still be alive today.

Its the values, stupid. Which is not about racism at all. Never was and never will be.

The fact that Eric Holder would pose for a photograph with this charlatan is proof positive that Holder is unfit to hold office in the USA.

It is a mockery to compare Ferguson, Missouri to Selma. There can be no peaceful nonresistance when the thug’s parents are inciting riots and shouting “Burn this b*tch down!”

Ferguson’s symbolism now sits alongside Selma’s significance in the civil rights movement

Instead of elevating Ferguson, they are defaming Selma.

What is impresses me most about this case is that the Left can take a low-life character like Michael Brown and his purposeful confrontation with police - and with sheer brazenness and shamelessness, try and make it into a moral crusade.

They didn’t even bother to try and find a middle-class, upstanding “victim” for their political purposes.

I wonder if Wilson would have needed so many rounds if he had been carrying .357 Sig?

Tell that to the lady whose bakery got trashed. They ruined so many businesses owned by those trying to improve the town. Those three old, racist clowns need to retire.

“Leftists are always “social activists” or “civil rights activists,” which is the easiest way to know you’re reading a liberal newspaper that’s terrible at hiding it.

Thompson concluded that just as Kent State “brought on a fresh wave of antiwar activism” — there she goes again with the un-labeling — Ferguson could redeem itself from racism just like Selma, if there’s enough “progressive” victory. Thompson can’t distinguish between Martin Luther King and Al Sharpton:”

Another perfect example of who the real racists are in America—the current Administration and all who think that way. I considered myself a pretty fair-minded person about six years ago. I am ashamed to admit that this Administration has affected my view of ‘african-americans’.

Be African, or be American, chose one or the other, and live there.

If the police are such a common danger to black people why do they use Michael Brown as their landmark, a person who attacked a policeman, punched him and grabbed his gun and a person who then later charged the policeman and wouldn't stop charging until he was dead?

In short, why do they need to make their Landmark case...up!

If you don’t like the police, the next time your life’s in danger call Al Sharpton.
