A squadron of ships from Russia's Northern Fleet is currently conducting drills in the English Channel, according to Russian media.

The squadron, lead by the Udaloy-class destroyer Severomorsk and including the Alexander Otrakovsky amphibious ship and a tanker, are conducting exercises such as assisting a vessel in distress, communication training and transferring fuel in international waters. The ships are crewed by a total of 250 Russian marines.

Russian media reports that the ships were also conducting drills to "repel air attack".

According to the Russian navy's press service:

"Today, a squadron of ships and support vessels from the Northern Fleet have passed the narrowest part of the English Channel in the Strait of Dover and have entered a bay near the mouth of the Seine River."

And there’s certainly a Brit SSN or two (probably a USN one too) stalking them with constantly updated firing solutions and warshots in the tubes.

And the Russians have no idea they’re there.

If true...Putin needs a wheelbarrow to carry around his “Junk”...

That's what the pansy's press agent wants us to think. And one need not be brilliant in order to provocate war.

“Yup, the community organizer will wag his finger and may even send a strongly worded letter to the Kremlin.”

No, he’ll float a line and dare them to cross it, which they’ll do immediately.

Intended more for the French, by the sound of it.

“Sending some marines to pick up the ship the Russians bought from the Frogs?”

Definitely to send a message to the French, I think.

Russia demonstrating that it can project force to several paces, if they need to.

Nah. I’m thinking a strongly worded tweet to hashtag:

#bringbackyourships

I don’t think that Putin is very happy with oil prices today and he is letting the West know.

It’s 20.6 miles wide at Dover. Its greatest width is 150 miles.

Gee, I wonder if the British still have those humungous coastal artillery naval rifles in serviceable condition that they used to use to trade rounds with the German guns at Cap Gris Nez. :-)

Edit: Nope, checked. The last ones were removed in 1956. A 14" naval rifle would be devastating to modern ships, though.

Makes sense, their northern ports are probably frozen solid. Maybe they’re searching for warm waters.

The Russkies are very afraid that their ships might capsize in the rough seas of the North Sea, during a bad storm that is going on right. So they are waiting out the bad weather. You know the russian ships have a problem to much water in them they will sink.

Next stop: a visit to Francois Hollande!

And when did the English Channel become "international waters?"

Eh, they’ve probably figured that we might be there, and they just don’t care.
