These fictional soldiers may be the ones Obama was counting on to fight the Islamic State after all, his vetted moderates among the Syrian rebels are no more real than these guys.
Iraq PM Haidar al-Abadi promises corruption crackdown after probe finds 50,000 ghost soldiers, AFP, November 30, 2014 (thanks to Bill):
Iraqs prime minister Haidar al-Abadi has promised to crackdown on corruption after an investigation uncovered the existence of 50,000 ghost soldiers.
The prime minister revealed the existence of 50,000 fictitious names in the military, Mr Abadis office said in a statement.
The 50,000 jobs were equivalent to almost four full army divisions.
Over the past few weeks, the PM has been cracking down to expose the ghost soldiers and get to the root of the problem, Mr Abadis spokesman Rafid Jaboori said.
He said the investigation started with a thorough headcount during the latest salary payment process.
Soldiers confirmed that salaries were paid only recently after a two-month delay about which they were given no explanation.
There are two kinds of fadhaiyin, one experienced officer in the security forces said, using a word which, literally translated, means space men, and refers to the fictitious soldiers crowding the payroll.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
. . . And they’re registered to vote in Ohio.
Only 50,000? The Chinese Army had a lot more than that when they fought the Japanese in WWII. That was one of the reasons they were not very successful.
I processed military payrolls for a DECADE. Someone is definitely on the take in this situation. And why didn’t *I* think of this, back in the day? j/k
What I find surprising is that it has even come to light. And I will find it even MORE surprising if anything is done about it, but much less surprised if those weren’t American Taxpayer Dollars somehow being funneled back to the ‘Rats.
Grrrrrr!
Oh, wait. Let me put on my Tin Foil Hat for a second: “Halliburton! Cheney! Bush’s Fault!”
Any relation to New Orleans’ ghost police from around Katrina time?
What difference does it make to have another fictitious 50,000 Iraqi soldiers on our payroll when half the f’n world is on it already?
A more important question is: “Will this shit continue when the Pubbies take over, or will it be business as usual?”
If the American government would give more money to the Iraqis, with fewer strings attached, then I am sure that the Iraqi army would be stronger and US interests would be better served. /s
No wonder ISIS took the northwest in a storm. There were no iraqi soldiers actually there.
Just who do these Iraqis think they are, The New Orleans Police Department? Chicago Public Works? Of all the nerve!
Just like the New Orleans Police Department!!!
ISIS probably is the 50,000 soldiers.
All their names are Mo.
“50,000 ghost soldiers, ?
I’d bet the farm the U.S.A. is picking up the tab for training and supplying these “50,000 ghost soldiers, .
Which means some scum would be pocketing that money.
Hey obammy, you getting anything from this slush fund too?
