My wife and I did this years ago when considering a career move and ended up not liking all of the potential locations we picked. By reviewing want ads, sales, letters to the editor, and especially local crime reporting, you can learn a lot that’s not spoken of by magazines taking advertising dollars from developers and chambers of commerce.
