First footage surfaces: Iranian jet seen attacking ISIS targets in Iraq

The Iranian Air Force is bombing Islamic State (ISIS) targets inside Iraqi territory. It is an intensification of Iran's military involvement on the side of the Shia regime of its neighbor and most likely also a sign of its alleged coordination with the U.S. military which is leading the international coalition fighting ISIS.

The first footage of an Iranian aircraft bombing inside Iraq was broadcast by Al Jazeera a few days ago in a report on a joint operation by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, Iraq's army and Shia militias to recapture two Kurdish towns in northeastern Iraq, near the Iranian border. The report mentions "Iraqi jet-fighters," but the plane seen bombing ISIS positions is a F-4 Phantom, which is not in Iraqi service.

The venerable Phantom which first entered service in 1960 (and was retired by the U.S. Air Force in the 1990s and Israel in 2004) still flies with two air-forces in the region, Turkey and Iran. The Phantom's markings are not visible in the Al Jazeera footage but since Turkey has so far refused to militarily aid the Kurds fighting across the border and the proximity to Iran, it is almost certainly an Iranian fighter.

When you enemies are fighting each other you should sit back and watch. Then when one emerges as the victor you destroy him.

I dont care who is flying it...

I made three Revell models of this bad boy when I was too young to read. I still think it rocks.

Not buying it.

The news ‘source’ (al jabba) is hardly credible.

Any video can be claimed to be filmed anywhere.

And Iranian F-4’s are hardly capable of delivering ordnance as their avionics are shot, and the number of F-4s capable of flying are way down in the low single digits. This means the Iranians will not risk flying and losing one of their ‘premier” jets on a routine mission and in airspace where the US and coalition forces control the skies.

They have taken down the video. More “not buying it” evidence that this is a fraud. The Iranians would be making very loud statements about how wonderful their air force is if they had.

During WWII we were sending supplies to Russia and were fighting the same enemy, Nazi Germany.

By the way, there is more personal freedom today in Iran than there was in Russia then and Saudi, today.

Eh. In the region Iran is the Clown under the bed in it’s willfulness to exterminate Israel. Hardly rhetorical.

Sorry there is no excuse.

Thank you, but the story makes clear they are using information provided by Al Jabba.

Afraid I need better proof. But that’s just me.

The story says they are using video from AJ who’s own report says that it was Iraqi.

JANES is saying uh no that is an F4 phantom. No need to trust AJ.

Very possible. Iran bought @220 Phantoms and 79 F14s and assuming with parts cannibalising they can probably still operate maybe a fourth of them.

With Russian and Chinese help they could install more modern electronics and weapons systems.

We haven’t heard anything about ISIS operating over the Iranian border but if they are the Mullahs are not likely to be forgiving and understanding.

When you enemies are fighting each other you should sit back and watch. Then when one emerges as the victor you destroy him.

Sometimes. The Russians watched us emerge as the victor over Japan. They were all set to invade Japan near the end of WWII, our dropping the big bomb on Japan forestalled Russia from any attempts to attack us. We have the advantage over Iran, even if they managed to make a nuke. Not likely we'll ever destroy Iran with Obama around.

Yes, I understand that. It is an F-4.

But I’m not buying the scernario. . .there is no way to verify the jet was flying when they say it was and by who.
