An Iranian McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II jet has struck Islamic State targets in the eastern Iraqi province of Diyala, footage shot by regional media shows.
At least one F-4 is seen conducting a bombing run against ground targets in the footage shot by Al Jazeera , which erroneously identified the aircraft as an Iraqi fighter. Iran and Turkey are the only regional operators of the F-4, and the location of the incident not far from the Iranian border, and Turkey's unwillingness to get involved in the conflict militarily, indicate this to be an Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) aircraft.
While the IRIAF is known to have contributed Sukhoi Su-25 'Frogfoot' ground attack aircraft to the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq (ostensibly donated to the Iraqi Air Force, but believed to be crewed by Iranian pilots), this footage is the first visual evidence of direct IRIAF involvement in the conflict.

Woooohoooooo! Blow each other up! Yay! I’m rooting for muslim on muslim esplosions!
pong
F4 Phantom.
60 years in combat service and they still do the job.
Sorry, “only” 56 years...
What the racist bastard in the White House is doing here is allowing Iran to become the major power broker in the Middle East. Anyone who thinks this is a good thing is mistaken.
That was one of my thoughts. The F-4 has been around a long time. Good old American know-how!
Which means we have probably recently supplied them with some spare parts...
Pretty sure I’m not wrong. Just because a few decades old Iranian jets bomb ISIS does not mean anything.
The wonderful thing about the muslim countries in the middle east is that they are all distrustful paranoid lunatics. Ruled by tyrannical despots.
Guess what? Everyone else threatened by ISIS is bombing them too.
Thing I worry about is that the only information we’re being told is wrong, or opposite of the truth. ISIS should have been dealt with, it’s bizarre that ISIS still holds what they have taken, yet every report is ISIS routed, ISIS loses, etc. What I fear is a united islamic middle east, a caliphate. That would be a disaster, and everyone on Earth would be in mortal danger. Would almost instantaneously guarantee WWIII. Another war of survival.
The flying brick.
Yes, I think Obama shipped them some spare/repair parts a few months ago.
But it also means that aircraft which have been sitting out of service in Iran for more than 30 years were put back in service with minimal effort.
I consider this a testament to the high quality of the original design and construction of these amazing aircraft.
I hope our guys do not end up having to shoot any of them down.
Yes.
I have fond memories of watching (HEARING) them take off, land and fly around the Va. Beach area when I was a youngster.
The Persians would make good allies without the Ayatollahs and the radicals. They have a culture that is distinct, ancient, and non-Arab all of which make them the ideal partner. Jimmy Carter, Democrat, gave us today’s Iran. It needn’t be that way forever.
I had an incentive ride in an F-4 back in 1989. Since then I’ve had 3 F-16 rides...but that F-4 ride stands out because of the nostalgia.
The only combat service of that plane probably was the recent event
Unless it was also flown in the Iran-Iraq war before being grounded for lack of parts.
Unless it was also flown in the Iran-Iraq war before being grounded for lack of parts.
I watched them fly off the Saratoga in ‘64 and ‘65.
Numerous fly overs at Camp Pendleton still linger in my memories. That and the thick plume of smoke on takeoff!
