Chevy Colorado beats F-150 for Truck of the Year
money.cnn.com ^ | December 3, 2014 | Peter Valdes-Dapena

You might have figured Ford's new all-aluminum F-150 would be a shoo-in for Motor Trend's 2015 Truck of the Year award, but you'd be wrong. General Motors had its own all-new truck in the running and that vehicle, the mid-sized Chevrolet Colorado, took the prize.

The Colorado is GM's new model that's designed to compete against trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier. Neither Ford (F) nor Chrysler Group (FCAU)'s Ram truck brand offer trucks this size any longer. It is smaller than the full-size Chevrolet Silverado truck.

"Colorado is a smart, capable, and refreshingly honest truck that makes a strong value and efficiency statement," Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh said in a statement. "It's perfectly sized and suited for the needs of many of today's truck users."

Colorado/Canyon pretty much sucked. That’s the best way I can put it. I’ll be happy to give specifics but that’s the truth.

It looks like GM ditched that horrid inline-5 in favor of a V-6. It appears that a 4-cylinder turbodiesel is in the works, too.

Pretty sure they did. I haven’t driven or even seen a new one.

As far as a 4 cyl diesel goes, I don’t see where it could be a big seller. Turbo diesels come with a hefty price. I’m hoping but not real optimistic

built on the same crappy foundation of missteps. I’ll never buy anything GM for the rest of my life!

I purchased a 2001 Chevy Silverado in December 2000. Drove it trouble free until last month - 218K miles. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

Bought a Ford F150 last month:

After the bailout, I'll never own another GM

Ford had planned to reintroduce the F-100 in that size class to replace the Ranger

******************

All they need to do is start selling the RANGER sold in every other country in the world here ... it's a great truck with a 4 or 5 cyl diesel engine , looks great ,, it's about 90% the size of a F150 but can do more ...

Even the freaking MONGOLIANS get better trucks than we do!! http://www.asiapacific.ford.com/en/mng/trucks/ranger

Wonder if GM ever fixed the DEXCOOL issues? Nothing like using antifreeze that eats the head gaskets...
********************
GM quietly switched back to the green stuff years ago ... I had to inform someone at AutoZone who was about to buy a gallon of Dexcool that he was better off flushing and switching ...

Do you know when the break point was? My 2014 Chevy (build date 12/6/13 is spec’d for Dexcool.

NOBODY , but NOBODY buys plastic bedliners... they trap water between themselves and the bed causing major rust issues ... for at least the last 10-15 years the only way to go has been to do the heavy spray in protection coating. http://www.linex.com/pages/2010/bedliners/index.php

I had a 1996 Z24 that had DexCool ... the major complaint is that when the chemicals in Dexcool break down it eats soft plastics ... which means many of the water passages and seals in todays plastic intake manifolds ... from there you have water being injested and causing head gasket issues ... I thought it was discontinued after the class action suit about 10 years ago...

found this in a web search...

***************
The suits stem from GM’s use of Dex-Cool, a coolant it first introduced in its vehicles in 1995 and sold in more than 35 million cars and trucks between 1995 and 2004. According to GM, 14 federal and state lawsuits seeking class-action status have been filed against GM over a variety of engine problems linked to Dex-Cool.

Perhaps the formulation of DexCool itself was was changed.
The stuff in my 2014 Chevy “looks” just like the stuff in my 2004 Caddy. Not sure if it is the same chemistry though.

Several years ago my daughter rented a Silverado for a weekend. She didn’t want to give it back.

I had a 2006 (bought in 2007) GMC Canyon. Put 70,000 on it by 2010. Great little 5 cylinder truck. Totaled it (meat between a dump truck and an Expedition). Bought an 2010 F150 FX4, and happy with it, almost 90,000 later.

That truck in the pictures is U G L Y.

>>Cafe standards and cost killed the Ranger... that and Ford really hadn’t done a damned thing to try to update it in over a decade...

Ford wanted the F-150 to continue to be the Best Selling Truck in America, so they did everything they could to kill the Ranger. They kept performance low, price high, no incentives, no redesign. The Asian Ranger is a great little truck, but Ford doesn’t want it in this country cutting in on the F-150’s sales.

I owned 2 S-10’s and a Colorado from 1996 to 2006 because Chevrolet actually tried to make their small truck worth buying. I would have bought Rangers if Ford had even made an effort to make it as good as the S-10.

Okay. Just pointing out that the old Colorado Platform cannot be compared to the All New Colorado Platform.

The issue you are writing about is the old GM versus Obama Motors, not the Vehicle that was the basis for this Thread.

Carry on.

I bought my Ranger XLT in 1998. At that time Ford was introducing the new F-Series body styles and greatly discounted the 98 models. I really wanted the F250-350 with the diesel and it was only a few thousand over the Ranger but I lived in Seattle and trying to get around in that size truck was the main reason I didn’t get F-Series.

That little truck proved to be all I needed anyway (except when it came to hauling plywood or sheet rock) and had plenty of power from the 4.6L V6 and was enough to haul a fully loaded largest U-Haul trailer from Seattle to Klamath Falls without any problems and the bed of the truck was loaded too. Handled great in the snow and ice as well.
