Krauthammer: Decision not to indict NYPD officer 'totally incomprehensible'

Charles Krauthammer said Wednesday on "Special Report with Bret Baier" that a grand jury's decision not to indict a New York City police officer in the death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died in July after the officer placed him in a chokehold, is "totally incomprehensible."

"It looks like they at least might have indicted him on something like involuntary manslaughter at the very least," Krauthammer, a syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor, said. "The guy was unarmed, and the crime was petty as they come. He was selling loose cigarettes, which in and of itself is almost absurd that somebody has to die over that."

He was a pos criminal.

He is now dead.

You have adjudicated, convicted and carried out his sentence in 2 short sentences.

I will not bow down to you and say I don't know what I do know.

I did not ask you to bow down to me. Why would you say such a thing?

I am weary of tis subject.

I suspect Mr. Garner would have relished his treatment resulted only in weariness, although we will never know, will we?

Put a good man in prison and a criminal up for sainthood.

Such hyperbole fails to advance the understanding of this case. It does divert the conversation to a totally unrelated subject, a goal I am sure you hope is the result of your comment. But your statement is a non sequitor regarding why the man died.

Your position is your position. That , it seems, will not change, despite the video. My position remains the same as when I first wrote to you. I will take care to try to learn as much as I can about the case.

Take the night off. Get some rest. You will think clearly in the morning after a good nights sleep.

If someone taunts a cop, he deserves to die?

With all of the defenders of the police actions here in this case, it is not surprising that we live in a country where cops are held to a lower standard of behavior than the general public, when it should be the other way around.

If you ever jaywalk and the cops kill you for it, will justice have been served?

Since you have already stated that you hate all blacks, your opinions have no value.

Whatever you call it, or how it happened, he died from not getting oxygen to his brain. My outrage is from the fact that he begged the officers for help and they ignored him...Serve and protect? Not in this case...

Show me where I stated I “hate all blacks”.

Your statement is a complete lie.

” It’s extremely unhelpful to us when seemingly legitimate cases of police brutality are lumped in with clear cases of officer self defense.”

Good point, Impy.

“....If someone taunts a cop, he deserves to die?....”

LOLOL...now that is a stretch...the guy brought his own death, and that even before the arrest.

Society sucks today on a whole...tolerating nonsense that should never be tolerated....the cops aren’t the problem...it’s folks who think they’re behavior should be tolerated...when in fact most are losers to begin with.

I have no empathy for people who shout down police, cram their faces in their faces, and excuse their own violen behavior.

So no...police are not the issue...mans out of control violence is....

I support how these officers handled this guy...period.

You just wrote that out of control violence is the problem.

Interesting that you can view that tape and not understand who committed the violent act.

You deserve the police force your government gives you.

Keep laughing.

Might as well, you have no clue who the bad guys are.

OK, well, that’s not what any of the reports say (although of course they could lie.) Even on the “right,” the story is that he was selling “loosies” for the umpteenth time.

Again, show me where I said “90% are savages”.

I have never said or wrote that nor that I hate black people.

Where are you getting this from?

You aren’t only misquoting me, you are completely pulling these words out of thin air.

Pull these quotes or stop posting lies about me.

At this point I think you owe me an apology.

The guy was resisting arrest.”Authority” that’s an established authority in this country.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.

The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves....Therefore whoever ‘resists’ the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.

Sorry to take so much time to come back. It didn’t work out yesterday.

As far as taxation goes, perhaps you’re right. The problem is that the folks who disagree with you outnumber the ones that agree with you. You either need to sell people on your vision, or prevail at a city council meeting.

The same applies at the state or federal level.

BTW: I don’t know what excuses were used to come up withe all the tobacco laws in New York. I am not a smoker, but I think they have gone absolutely nuts with these laws over the last 5-7 years.

To be honest, I was glad they came up with no smoking establishments, but beyond that it’s just crazy. Now there’s no smoking outside, and the cost of cigarettes has gone ballistic. The taxation is insane.

It would seem reasoned to to desire to stop single cigarette sales on the street. Those are unregulated and there is an issue with kids being able to guy them and take up smoking.

As for all this, the laws are not created by the police. The police are the “law enforcement” arm of the justice system.

We don’t want police to ignore the laws when they want. That’s evident by what is taking place with illegal immigration today.

This guy refused to be cited or arrested. He was assigned to a unit with a Black Female Sargent. The procedures used were those prescribed by the department in training. I might add, those procedures had been reviewed years ago when the use of the baton was eliminated during these types of altercations.

This man was alive when he boarded the ambulance. He died on the way to the hospital. The officers used reasonable means to take him down and subdue him. They didn’t know his medical record.

This guy took his chances. He knew what he was doing was wrong. He knew his medical condition better than the officers did. He should have complied.

Baden seems to agree that too much pressure was used. He had a better look at the wind-pipe than I did.

The grand jury took months to review what took place. I don’t think grand juries necessarily give police officer a license to do whatever they want.

I took a look at the demeanor of the men taking that suspect down. None of them were cursing him, yelling racial epitaphs or striking him violently.

I do not see those guys as trying to be mean to him. Perhaps you see something I don’t.

I wish he had merely complied with the law, or the officers when they approached him.

I just wrote a reply to Lurker. It should be close to this post. You may wish to take a look at it.

The British arbitrarily set taxes on the colonists.

We have a representative government today. There is a difference.

No, the dead guy was not doing the right thing.

We have representatives at the local, state, and federal level. If we don’t like things, we can contact our representatives and seek redress. We can try to get members of our community on our side. We can even protest. What you can’t do, is break the law anyway.

When legal bodies of our government set laws, we are required to abide by them. Whether merely for taxation purposes, or to prevent black markets, or to prevent underage kids from getting cigarettes, it is legitimate to come up with rules and regulations (laws).

For the record, I disagree with the levels of taxation on cigarettes. I disagree with restrictions on smoking outdoors in many instances.

I don’t smoke, but as I was telling others, I side with smokers on a number of issues.

I agree with your comments:

It seems to me that there is a dynamic at play with Blacks.

The dynamic goes something like this.

From their leaders:

Empowerment:

You should be proud to be Black. If someone tries to interfere with what you are doing, as a Black person you need to stand up for your rights. You are just as entitled as any White guy. Never forget that. Push back, don’t let anyone walk on you.

Result:

Some limits to activity are legitimate, but certain Blacks wrongly apply the “Empowerment” guidelines above, and don’t comply when everyone must.

This causes problems for everyone.

Resolution:

Follow the laws. If you don’t like them, get them changed. If you don’t follow the laws, act reasoned when officers challenge you. If you’re breaking the law, you will be subject to the penalties, not because you are Black, but because you broke the law.

Conduct yourself decently. Be respectful even if the officers aren’t. You put yourself out there. You have nobody to blame but yourself for doing that.

We’ve seen this movie before. It’s called “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes”.
