In Louisiana Runoff Election, Senator Landrieu Tries to Revive Her Base
NY Times ^ | December 4, 2014 | Richard Fausset

he has been rebuffed by her liberal colleagues in Washington and pilloried at home for voting with the president, and has watched helplessly while her Democratic base has eroded like a cheap levee.

These are hard times for Mary L. Landrieu, the last Deep South Democrat in the United States Senate.

But on the cusp of a Saturday runoff election that feels as much like a race against history as against a Republican opponent, Ms. Landrieu has been barnstorming around her home state on what she called her “Louisiana First Victory Tour,” hugging, kissing and cajoling voters with an argument that has served her well for the 18 years she has been in the Senate.

her Democratic base has eroded like a cheap levee.

What a great phrase! It brings to the forefront the corruption in Louisiana politics that has existed almost forever. Levees, roads and other public structures that were built with inferior materials (if at all) and the remaining cash doled out as political party favors.

In 2002 Landrieu started at 46% versus 42% this time, and Terrell had 27% with a total of 51% GOP votes against Landrieu, while Cassidy had 41% straight up with a total 56% GOP votes against Landrieu.

She won’t be winning this one.

Landrieu will bring out the dead to vote on Saturday. The Republicans better have poll watchers with some nerve at every 25 vote polling place in the state. She has stolen this seat before and will no doubt try that crooked road to victory again.

If Mary Landrieu loses this weekend and the Deep South no longer has a Democratic Senator in Washington, how will the Democratic party be able to rebuild itself?

In 2016, another group of Democratic Senators who voted for ObamaCare will be seeking re-election, and how will they be able to do any better than Mary Landrieu did this year?

And what about other areas of the country? Now that Republican governors have been elected in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, the upper Midwest no longer has a Democratic governor, and how long will it be before those states’ voters also replace their Democrats in Washington with Republicans like the Deep South has done?

Yes, the Democrats can bring in millions of Hispanics to vote for them, but the new arrivals will either congregate in deep blue states like California and New York, or in Texas, where the new Republican governor-elect received 44% of that state’s Hispanic vote.

No, to revive the Democrats’ fortunes they will have to find a way to add new deep-blue, liberal-majority states to our country. But even the entire faculty of MIT couldn’t gruber U.S. voters into supporting such an underhanded scheme.

I’m popping some popcorn for the results, I think.

I'm picking up the ingredients for a big pot of chicken-andouille gumbo.

Justin Wilson's recipe, I gahr-ohnn-tee!

“How much influence does the NYT actually have in Louisiana?”

They use it as table cloths for the crawfish boil.

Yes, and like Alaska, she will take a month to concede-to make sure every vote is counted!

Listen, I lived in Dinwiddie County Virginia for three years when I was a kid, and I lived in Hendersonville NC for more than a year when I was on my first job.

I like the South, I really do. I like most everything about it. I even like the hot weather.

The only thing is, I'm a Yankee. And Southerners just seem to be waiting for me to say something to hurt their feelings, even though I never did. At least not on purpose.

Believe me, I don't think Southerners are dumb. I know all about that little game you guys play with northerners, acting like a bumpkin while you're taking us to the cleaners.

But I don't understand the sensitivity. There's lots of Northerners who think your fine. Why do you assume we're all nasty?

After I lived in Hendersonville for almost a year, I decided one day (as an experiment) to see if my imitation of a southern accent would go over with people who lived in Hendersonville. You know what? It did! They started treating me real nice. All I had to do was talk like a North Carolinian, and I got the red-carpet treatment. Instead of saying "how are you?" I just said "you all raht?" and boom, the doors opened, girls wanted to go out with me, etc., etc.

I learned to talk North Carolina in nine or ten months.

I don't guess I could learn to talk Louisiana in less than a couple of years, I'll be the first to admit.

It might seem ancient history but the civil war as they call it is still family history here.
Especially how after wards the carpetbaggers came in and screwed everyone they could. Made their bad situation much worse.
Close knit people they pass the stories down.
Though 36 years ago i married a wonderful girl from New Jersey i know you all Yankees are out to get us. (Just kidding),
Also when in Montana a wonderful lady told me they hate outsiders who move in, drive up prices so local kids can’t afford homes there any more,
Though those scoundrels are nasties from Calif an Seattle.
I moved to Port st Lucie 30 years ago. N.Y. Mets opened spring training here.
10,000 folks are now 180,000, mostly Yankees from .n.y.

If Mary Landrieu loses this weekend and the Deep South no longer has a Democratic Senator in Washington,

***************

A side note to your comment. With the defeat of Landrieu, Louisiana won’t have
any elected statewide democrats as she is the last one.
