Again, a governor's appointment for a vacant seat is valid for only the current term. After that state laws vary. Some appointments are valid for the remainder of the term - some are valid until the governor sets a date for a special election, and some are valid until the next regularly scheduled election.

There is no provision to appoint a senator to a future term. Can you imagine if a governor could appoint someone before an election is even held?
