Knew two kids whose lawyer father annulled his first marriage of close to 30 years instead of divorcing. Had them sign papers to make them “bastards” in the eyes of the Catholic church or he would cut them out of his substantial will. I see the lawyer every so often when I go back to my hometown, out at dinner with his new wife and kids and I ask him about his first two kids just for spite.

Annulment does not make children “bastards”.

You are not fully apprised of the the basic facts of Catholic annulment. First, it’s not either or, you can’t get annulled without first being civilly divorced, see. Secondly, annulment does not make the first children bastards, see. The bastard thing is a civil deal, and the civil divorce finds the kids are born of the marriage.

Get a clue.

However, I totally approve of you needling this prick lawyer about his first marriage.

“Had them sign papers to make them “bastards” in the eyes of the Catholic church or he would cut them out of his substantial will.”

Your being silly... The Catholic Church would not consider them “bastards” any more than it would consider the hundreds of millions of kids from parents without a sacramental marriage.

The annulment has nothing to do with the legitimacy of the first marriage.

good for you.

I remember visiting my father and his new wife one weekend. We were out having lunch and the waitress asked me where I had been hiding (apparently mentioning any of his children hadn’t happened) and I politely and cheerily responded, “Living with his ex-wife, my mother.”

I don’t know what legal process you are talking about, because there is no legal process in the Catholic Church regarding marriage that makes children “bastards.” And there are no forms used by the Catholic Church in connection with marriage that any child signs.
