I just know I would hate to have a small business on Telegraph Ave. near the University right now.

Smashed windows and plywood at: Chase Bank at Shattuck Avenue and Center Street, AT&T phone store nearby, Paris Baguette nearby, McDonald's at Shattuck Avenue and University Avenue, Trader Joe's (University Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way (ne' Grove Street)). That's just a sampling.

How is Half Price Books on Shattuck? I love that store. You can’t go in there without finding an armload of books. Really inexpensive too. It’s worth going into liberal-land Berkeley.

Trader Joes’ probably wonders “What did we do wrong?” They are very ‘green’ in that this store was one of the first to disallow plastic bags. They have aisles full of Organic items. The store decor is gratuitously faux shabby. What’s not to like?” Same with Whole Foods. Suddenly, they too are the enemy.

After all the windows have been smashed for the tenth time that month, after 50% of the business owners decide to move away to Ashby, Point Richmond, Pittsburg or El Cerrito, who then, is ‘the friend? He who has nothing?
