Topeka Police were forced to use deadly force after a 19 year old suspect, involved in several crimes, refused to put down his weapon.I do object to this wording. It reissues police statements as if they are simply fact.
Now in all likelihood the police statements ARE fact, but the reporter has no way to know that unless he witnessed the events himself.
My preferred version:
“Topeka Police reportedly were forced to use deadly force after a 19 year old suspect, involved in several crimes, refused to put down his weapon.”
I write reports and to be accurate I cannot state as a fact something simply reported to me by someone else. It’s hearsay.
