NOEL brightens up fort's Brown Parade Field. Annual public event is at new place

FORT HUACHUCA — On a hill not far from Brown Parade Feld, a large white star shined on a Christmas NOEL scene.

The field and houses and former enlisted barracks dating to the late 1800s, lining the north and south ends of the field, were lit with festive lights adding an even more glow.

Inside a large tent, children did holiday crafts, some making decorations for their family tree, or as gifts for friends and families — all at no cost, courtesy of the post’s Family, Morale and Welfare Division.

Brother and sister, Dylan, 8, and Skylar, 6, Rubstello were busy making decorations, as mom, Holly, and dad, James, looked on.

Skylar was a bundle of energy, which could not be captured and bottled, dancing around and laughing, in a silly way.

Meanwhile tolerant and focused older brother was all business like fine tuning, what he said were “ornaments for the tree.”

The Night Of Extraordinary Lights was moved to the parade field from its usual spot at the post golf course.

The field was awash with events, including a small village with many craft shops, with the entry ways into the tents made to look like a house.

Horse rides for children were given and a large outdoor screen was showing “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” as young viewers sat on bales of hay to watch.

There were hot drinks available to chase away the growing evening chill.

Santa held court at the gazebo, at the west end the field.

A skating rink, sans real ice, but with a material mimicking frozen water waited for people to obtain skates to take a whirl around.

memories of MIOAC there in 1982. Lived in officer’s quarters just a couple of blocks from the old parade ground. And the late afternoon runs up Huachuca Canyon.
