Ukraine: Lethal Aid And $350 Million In Weapons Included In Ukraine Freedom Support Act

House Resolution 758 officially calls upon President Obama “to provide the Government of Ukraine with lethal and non-lethal defense articles, services, and training required to effectively defend its territory and sovereignty.” The Ukraine Support Act of 2014 does not use the phrase “lethal aid,” but it does give authorization to Obama to “provide defense articles, defense services, and training to the Government of Ukraine for the purpose of countering offensive weapons and reestablishing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including anti-tank and anti-armor weapons, crew weapons and ammunition, counter-artillery radars to identify and target artillery batteries, fire control, range finder, and optical and guidance and control equipment, tactical troop-operated surveillance drones, and secure command and communications equipment, pursuant to the provisions of the Arms Export Control Act (22 U.S.C. 2751 et seq.), the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (22 U.S.C. 2151 et seq.), and other relevant provisions of law.”

In addition, the bill appropriates $350 million in funding for this purpose, allotting $100 million to 2015 and $125 million each for both 2016 and 2017. The bill also calls for additional economic sanctions against Russia and the creation of additional media outlets that would target Russian-speaking citizens.

“If the roles were reversed, and Russia granted “lethal foreign aid” to a hostile nation anywhere close to our borders”

In order to have the roles reserved, America would have to invade and annex parts of Mexico or Canada first.

Russia has not invaded Ukraine. If it had, the fight would have been over very quickly. What we are doing in Ukraine is justifying more direct and decisive military intervention by Russia on its border. What happens in Ukraine is no more our business than what happens in Canada or Mexico is Russia’s.

“Russia was not really involved in Libya, so there’s no way they were “betrayed” in any sense.”

Their vote in the UN on Libya was purchased with many promises all of which were reneged on. Yes, we betrayed their trust, the worst of sins. As for the rest, neither side has a good record. But Clinton and Obama went out of their way to create damage. We are harboring Muslims here who have committed acts of terror in Russia. We don’t even give them the courtesy of responding to their extradition requests. What would that response be? “Yes, we know they’re murders and they continue to plan and execute murders in Russia, but we don’t care.”

The established countries, including Russia, should come together to stop all terrorism. If somebody is killing non-combatants for political purposes, they can’t be called freedom fighters here if they are committing acts of terror there. We could easily suffer just as much if they played that game too.

“Russia has not invaded Ukraine.”

I’m pretty sure they did.

I do not think “invaded” means what you think it means.

An invasion by Russian armed forces would look much like an invasion by US armed forces, with overwhelming strategic and tactical air power, naval blockade and raids, deep interdiction raids to spread confusion and disrupt lines of communication, massive artillery preparatory fires, and divisions advancing along multiple axes followed by huge logistical trains. This has not happened.

Yes it has.

An invasion by Russian armed forces would look much like an invasion by US armed forces, with overwhelming strategic and tactical air power, naval blockade and raids
>> Crimea, attacked, taken naval base, naval blockade, sunken naval vessels, air attacks.

deep interdiction raids to spread confusion and disrupt lines of communication,
>> Ongoing, in fact plenty of Russians on FR spreading confusion too, lol

massive artillery preparatory fires, and divisions advancing along multiple axes
>> Plenty of artillery in the East, crossing over from Russia, AA attacks on Ukrainian aircraft and downing of a jetliner.

followed by huge logistical trains.
>> plenty of supplies moving in convoys from Russia to resupply crimea and their forces in the East.

This has not happened.
>> OK.

“Russia has not invaded Ukraine. If it had, the fight would have been over very quickly.”

When one side is far stronger than other, it doesn't need to use full force in order to invade them. Similarly, Ukraine could cause great damage in Slovakia or Moldova using just a fraction of own armed forces...

Or US could totally destabilize Canada... “invest” several billion in Quebec, send in a few thousand operatives “on vacations”, train and organize 20-30k local “pro-independence activists”/drunks/criminals, send a few hundred old M-60s/M-113s/M-109s and some Stingers. Canadians with their ~70 Hornets and 150 tanks would be struggling to take down “rebellion” of that scale. Unless they would receive significant military aid from Russia, which would likely arrive soon afterwards.

Russia, after the end of the cold war, got massive economic aid, G-7 membership, Russia-NATO council and many other things they didn't deserve. If America wanted to “betray” Russia, there wouldn't be Russia today.
