An ex-con who died of his injuries today after being shot over the weekend by a retired Union City police officer was carrying a loaded .38-caliber revolver, sources with direct knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Authorities also are expected to announce that they've secured a surveillance video of the incident. The retired officer was working as a UPS security guard when 26-year-old Devin Grimes and another man who were in a pickup truck -- and wearing masks -- ordered him out of his Infiniti at gunpoint around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, law enforcement sources told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.

That's when he reached for his fully licensed .45-caliber Glock, they said. "Fearing that he would be executed, he turned in his seat and fired several rounds at the suspect, hitting him five times," one source said.

Nice shootin'. Good thing his loaded handgun was fully licensed.

I hope he didn't use hollowpoints.

Grimes, who has four children including a set of twins, had served a stint in prison and had other run-ins with the law in the past. More recently, he had been attempting to turn his life around and taken a job at a Shop-Rite in Carteret.

why did he use a .45?

Cause he didn’t have a .46.

Nice shooting and one more flush of the toilet.

Dark skinned type?

Is this the next “African American” civil rights martyr?

At least this one wasn’t unarmed. Of course, the ex-cop should have just shot the gun out of his hand./s

Ah, so he was just moonlighting as a carjacker.

Hollowpoints are fine as long as factory ammunition is used. Use of hand loaded HP ammo can leave one open to lawsuits or possibly even prosecution from an overly zealous DA. Also HP ammo is banned in some localities, e.g. NJ. Black Talon has been banned in some places too.

The only character witness to talk to the news is his Mother.

Show me some examples where a Mother has taken her son or daughters actions and looked at them objectively saying “Yea, he deserved it, I did everything I could to raise him right, but he made bad choices.”

Those examples are very rare and occasional compared to “I know for a fact my son could not have killed/raped/robbed those innocent people. Even though I have seen the tape and that was my son, it was the white/black/jews/arabs/etc...That made him do it, DAMN THEM!!!!”

It’s because they would have to acknowledge their own faults and look in the mirror. Always wondering what a they could have done differently to change the path of their lost offspring.

But what a lot of parents do not understand is that no matter how good of a parent you are, sometimes your kids are bad. That isn’t your fault. At some point your kids become responsible for their own choices, their own free will and it isn’t your fault. You can set a good example and have the child rebel and do everything wrong and not listen. You can set a bad example and have the child stand up and say “NO, I WILL NOT BE MY FATHER/MOTHER”.

Parenting is important, but if the kids don’t listen they don’t listen. It’s really as simple as that. Which could be a symptom of dysfunctional parenting, or a symptom of corrupted culture and youth. Really it is a symptom of sin, and no amount of parenting can change the fall of man.

I guess ski masks are about to become the protesters’ new fashion statement of choice.

members of the CBC will be donning them in the floor of the house . . . race baiters will lament “racial stereotyping”, because, obviously, no one would have shot an armed white dude wearing a ski mask as he committed armed robbery . . . rachel maddow will wear one on set from now one — and it will be a huge improvement . . .

He had no arms?

My arms have, and can be used as weapons as needed. Not very often throughout my short life. I could kill with them if it meant my life, or a violent criminal’s.

I would be very happy to never have to use my arms as a deadly weapon, it would be a shame to have to kill. However in self defense. If it comes down to a violent criminal or me. It will be me every single time no matter what I face.

I propose “unarmed” be changed to “did not have a gun” in this case, modify as needed.

Carjackings seem to be a big problem in NJ.

I wonder why?

Or he could have dodged the bullets and ran away before calling every news outlet in the country, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Present Obama, and every black thug type in the town before asking for permission to use lethal force.

Eight shots could be considered pretty excessive. What do the forensics show? Usually it only takes one, maybe two depending on caliber. But in the heat of the moment you have two choices. Live or die. Cop chose live. End of story.

Well, you know the fotty-5 is supposta be a one-shot man-stopper, after all.

You shoot until the threat is neutralized or you run out of bullets. Most people involved in a life or death shooting won’t be able to tell you how many shots they fired. Some people might tend to fire a couple of extra shots just to be on the safe side.

Yes. I know.

Just my thoughts. If threat was neutralized after 1-3 shots then what point is there wasting bullets on this trash? In a firefight ammo and cover are your priorities. How would you know he was alone? Guy was trained as a cop. All that training and experience go through his mind. Panic, adrenaline? Police are taught how to not panic. Seems fishy, but will suspend further speculation until more facts present themselves. Am likely wrong.

You know I agree completely. But victim was a retired cop, and isn’t some average Joe with a gun.

All based on media hype. Remember it was Jocelyn Elders who said we need safer bullets.
