Governor abandons single-payer health care plan

Calling it the biggest disappointment of his career, Gov. Peter Shumlin said Wednesday he was abandoning plans to make Vermont the first state in the country with a universal, publicly funded health care system.

Going forward with a project four years in the making would require tax increases too big for the state to absorb, Shumlin said. The measure had been the centerpiece of the Democratic governor's agenda and was watched and rooted for by single-payer health care supporters around the country.

"I am not going (to) undermine the hope of achieving critically important health care reforms for this state by pushing prematurely for single payer when it is not the right time for Vermont," Shumlin said to reporters and two boards advising him on health care changes.

I just can’t believe they pulled the plug before implementation. Something that doesn’t work and is unaffordable never stopped the dems before....

Gov. Shumlin might have shot himself in the foot on this one. -Tom

from-Kenneth Artz (iamkenartz@hotmail.com)
During his 2014 campaign, ....Shumlin received 46.4 percent of the vote to Republican opponent Scott Milne’s 45.1 percent. .....
Under Vermont law, if no candidate for governor receives a majority in the election, the state legislature selects the winner.

“Shumlin is damaged,” said Rob Roper of the Ethan Allen Institute, a think tank in Vermont. “He’s upset everyone but the people in Montpelier who want single-payer. I wouldn’t be surprised if the legislature chooses someone else to be governor.”

The legislature will select the next governor in early January.

This is shocking.

Not that single payer can’t work.

That a Democrat just exhibited a lot of common sense and didn’t implement his legacy achievement when faced with the facts of it’s eventual failure and damage to citizens.

I salute him. (He’s way off over there to the Northeast somewhere, what the hell.)

I just glad he realized that it was a mistake before he tried to ram it down everyone’s throat.

Someone should alert former Vermont Governor Howard Dean that communism doesn't work.

Here he is speaking to a 2004 rally for government run healthcare held by the Democrat Socialists of America, the same communist group that helped install Obama.

In this case the tax burden on the working citizens of VT was going to be horrific....there’s less than seven hundred thousand people in the whole state. There’s more people in several blocks of NYC. It was never going to work.
