Depends on how tightly you want to control the corporate environment. If you allow people to connect the devices they personally own to the corporate network, then you can’t have this kind of control. If you say they must use a locked-down, corporate-issued computer, employees will get upset over not being able to install software and otherwise do whatever they want.

I used to be an NT/Windows admin over hundreds of computers. There was one supervisor who constantly called my techs to fix her computer after she corrupted it. Problem was she downloaded crap from the internet over and over again, mostly from attaching devices from home. I gave orders to lock it down, no USB, DVD or floppy external access. We already had filters on direct Internet access. Then she had someone revert the changes, and infected her machine again. This went on for a year before she left. Unfortunately, we were a no Apple allowed shop, sigh...

Wow. I don’t know what kind of companies you’ve worked for, but that is exactly the expectation everywhere that I’ve worked. Company computers are for company work with company software, and that’s all. A small amount of personal email or web access might be permissible, but installing software not licensed to the company is strictly forbidden. This is for several reasons, namely, security and legal protection from pirated or unlicensed software.

In the age of smartphones, there’s almost no reason an employee needs to perform any personal tasks on company IT assets.
