I wouldn’t rule anything out, but it’s not something you would expect in Cairns. It’s a sizeable city (over 100,000 people) but there’s no large settlements anywhere near it, and the Muslim population is so negligible, it doesn’t even show up on demographic data.

I think it’s fairly clear by now that the perpetrator was a relative or perhaps mother, who attempted to kill herself. Why gun laws and islam feature in the comments beats me.

Ms Thaiday said the woman speaking with police was the children’s mother and that friends and family were now taking care of the brother who discovered the scene.

There is a large 90-year-old population of white Albanian Muslims thirty kilometers west of Cairns in Marbeeba. There is a Muslim boarding school in Mareeba. There is concern about radicalization.
The mother of several children found dead in a Cairns home has been arrested for their murder, police have confirmed this morning.
