Detroit bouncing back from bankruptcy
Yahoo News ^ | 17DEC2014 | Bianna Golodryga

It was the city on the verge of collapse, perhaps the ultimate example of how a one-time metropolis turned into a sad memory. For the past four decades or so, Detroit, once a mecca for immigrants and the heart of America's industrial revolution, not to mention pop culture, turned into a virtual ghost town. Businesses shut their doors and residents fled by the masses, from a peak of 1.8 million to around 700,000 today. The rapid decline of the auto industry, which the city once so proudly called its lifeline, unearthed a catastrophic failure. One of the nation's major cities relied solely on a single source of economic growth. And not only that, but that one source failed at its primary job: competing for customer loyalty at a time of expanding global competition.

Economic is not difficult. Capitalism works when free from oppressive laws, regulations and taxation.

The sad thing is that the socialist know this but refused to allow it. The only reason I can come up with is that they (the socialist) want what Detroit has become. The population as slaves to the state, and their votes bought with EBT cards. The elite on top make millions upon the suffering of those on the bottom.

Conservatives want the best for all Americans, but the path required for Detroit to return to it’s former glory has been demonize by the left. Everything needed to improve the life of those living in Detroit has been called “racist”.

There is hope. Citizens behind the iron curtain eventually realized that they were lied to, and that there was a way out of their misery, but that way was not communism. The citizens caught in one party cities such as Detroit will have to find the answers on their own since they have been taught to fear advise from those on the right. I wish them luck.

“Blah blah blah.....sure you can bounce back if you do not pay your obligations.”

Agree. Detroit and Greece; same thing. While each have been allowed to restructure loans, and much debt has been forgiven or reduced, nothing has been done by either about systemic problems such as unsustainable entitlements, high taxes and public sector sucking the life-blood out of each. They’ll be back in the sewer within a year, hide and watch......

If your son is studying British imperial history, make sure he reads the Flashman novels along the way (if he hasn’t already). I’ve plowed through enough of the serious histories as well, but for a quick gloss on how ridiculously small numbers of Englishmen conquered the world, it’s hard to beat Flashy. In today’s climate, the Flashman series is also a wonderful antidote to the reflexive PC impulse to denigrate the Europeans and uncritically idolize native cultures. The author, George McDonald Fraser, is unsparing to both sides. Fraser also respects the good soldiers on both sides, and the British virtues come through very clearly in the legendary imperial figures who populate the background, and among whom Flashman is forever dodging his way. I recommend the books to anyone reading on the history of British imperialism.

I don’t think Detroit is any better now, but if they continue losing population that is a good start. Here in the northeast they have to expel the undesirables to start a recovery (the money won’t come if the gibsmedats are in charge); it appears in Detroit they are “self-expelling”.

Years ago there was talk of a revival of Asbury Park, NJ; it was supposed to become a mecca for NYC-area homosexuals. When they realized the gibsmedats would be a few blocks from them, the plans shut down; they were smart enough to know they were being drawn there to pay for the gibsmedats’ “services”. Jersey City, on the other hand, has gone through an ethnic cleansing of whole neighborhoods to attract monied residents from NYC as it continues to deteriorate.

Your post brought to mind “Flashman at the Charge” I must have read it or read of it years ago. A real blast from the past.

Those are sound proposals, but there must be funding for the population of “takers” (or they must be relocated elsewhere). Detroit is a microcosm of what has happened in NJ (the whole NYC metro area, in fact); takers continue voting for Dems because they don’t have to pay for the policies (programs, public school teachers, employee benefits & retirements, etc.), and “makers” (individual & corporate) are fleeing.

Vouchers are a great idea, but don’t work when the breeding population isn’t kicking into the common till to fund them; childless taxpayers (or those with grown children) are paying for school systems they don’t use.

Int he 1980s I worked as a janitor in a company that employed a number of blacks from Newark NJ; one had a calendar on the wall titled “Newark is on the Move”. After passing it for years, I finally looked closely at it and saw the date was something like 1968.

It still isn’t “on the move”, despite decades of massive infusions of government (read: taxpayer) cash.

Maybe the Chinese are playing a long game. Buy enough land in a place and eventually....

Bouncing back? I doubt it. More like skipping off the bottom.

Give them 2 years, they’ll be back where they were.

Exactly. Pretty much every FReeper on this thread sounds like they would be more comfortable at the DU where they all race to be the first one to say they same ignorant old thing.

The fact is that republicans and business are driving changes in Detroit these days and that is the difference. Businesses, developers, and investors have descended on the city because the bankruptcy has made Detroit the safest bet in the country.

The idiots can stand on the tracks and laugh at the rickety handcart of Detroit rolling away but they have a freight train of debt bearing down on them from behind.

I was actually waiting to hear about that evil gentrification that blacks complain about when Whitey McCracker-Honkey moves back in after complaining about White Flight from years before.

What you describe is the phenomenon of willfully mistaking circumstantial evidence with empirical evidence. Liberals engage in this practice to pretend their stupid ideas are not failures. My opinion is: Unless Detroit is put under martial law and the denizens have no part in the political process, or they remove the present occupiers, there really is no hope.
