If your government doesn't trust you to keep one of these in your home, loaded, they don't really trust you.
The 1988 ban was kneejerk, in so much as Michael Ryan was one of a tiny number in the UK that actually owned one. Even UK handguns were/are a minority. Most UK guns have always been shotguns and rifles.
