I normally don't use our Facebook page as a platform, but considering the events in New York, Florida and other places around the United States over the past year I feel I have a duty to speak up.
We went into this profession not for fame, hype or money, but to make a positive difference in the communities in which we work as law enforcement officers. Whether it is a traffic stop for drunk driving or an arrest for domestic assault, our goal is to keep our community safe whether you are a visitor, business owner or resident.
We are brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters just like anyone else in society with the additional burden of not knowing what the next call for service will be, how we will be received and if it is the last thing we will ever do. We knew this when we took our oath, but our profession seems to have become even more deadly from sitting in a squad car (New York) or following up on a noise complaint (Florida). Officers are killed locally too as we will never forget the killing of Officer Tommy Decker of the Cold Spring/Richmond Police Department or the killing of Officer Brian Klinefelter of the St. Joseph Police Department. Both were young men with families who had a lifetime of great things ahead of them.
Over the past 10 years of being the chief of police my officers have been spit at, bitten, physically assaulted and threatened with death, yet they dutifully fulfill their role as expected day in and day out regardless of what they encounter. Although they continue to work diligently at their jobs, we are all concerned when a uniform we wear with pride becomes a symbol to be hated, regardless of who the person wearing it is. We remain steadfast in our commitment to being there for our community when you call us in your time of need.
I have an outstanding group of men and women who I work with and I couldn't be more proud of their commitment to the community and in how they hold each other up in time of need.
Stay Safe!! Chief Hughes
You da man, Chief.
We are on your side.
Excellent.
the lefties will scream: Racist! he has to go, NOW!
or something similar, just as they always do.
The left cannot stand it when a person in a position of power says something that is intelligent and positive.
I’m just thinking that things are so bad in some places that the next dog an officer shoots unjustly will be enough to set off a national firestorm!(and I’m only half joking...)
Maybe if you’ve been arrested 19 times, especially for his list of offenses, you should have done some jail time?
Uh....maybe he should have STILL been in jail?
Very nice post. Hats off to Chief Hughes...
Not Holder’s people.
Saw an ad during the Indianapolis Colts whooping where officers we shown as lurking in the shadows ready to arrest anyone who drives under the influence. Granted, they are of help in maintaining law and order, but this maneuver to make them appear omnipresent does not do them much good in the way of PR these days.
I've been to many college and pro football games...when the game is over 50 to 100 thousand fans want to get out of there and go their various ways....I want to see police presence EVERYWHERE to keep people moving, traffic moving, and everyone safe.....police presence is our friend....don't ever doubt it.
I don’t have a problem with their presence under those conditions. It’s showing them on TV as a sinister, omnipresent force out to get you that may pan out as a negative when a real cop shows up just doing his job.
I doubt you would ever hear anything like that from the MPLS Police Chief.
They are an omnipresent force, but the are out to get those who might harm you....don't be paranoid, unless you are a bad guy, they aren't after you....
