The ACLU calls the U.S. the largest jailer in the world, holding roughly 25 percent of the world’s prison population despite the fact that national population represents only 5 percent of the world’s. After a three-year decline in the incarcerated population that began in 2010—a hopeful counter to decades of growth—the number of people in prison in the United States increased again last year, according to a report released on Friday by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).

The U.S. has the highest prison population rate in the world, according to the U.K.-based International Centre for Prison Studies’ most recent World Prison Population List. As of the end of 2011, the prison rate in the U.S. stood at 716 out of 100,000 of the national population, just ahead of St. Kitts and Nevis (714) and Seychelles (709). The rate-drop is greater with the next few entries on the list: U.S. Virgin Islands (539), Barbados (521), Cuba (510) and Rwanda (492).

Nearly 22 percent of the world’s 10.2 million inmates, counting both pretrial detainees and sentenced prisoners, are being held in the U.S., according to the World Prison Population List.

There are fewer Americans in prison, jail, probation, or parole than any time since 2003

The US corrections population dropped to its lowest point since 2003, US Attorney General Eric Holder announced Friday.

The number of Americans in prison, jail, parole, or probation dropped to less than 6.9 million in 2013, down 41,500 compared to 2012 and hitting the lowest point since 2003, according to a report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

The answer is simple: Create a penal colony on an island and dump them there.

Some people commit crimes in order to get the free room and board. So of course the prison population is growing. It’s better than living out on the cold streets.

The prison population should be even higher with the admittance of Obama, Holder, Sharpton, and others.

So what is the point?

We have too many criminals?

We jail people who shouldn’t be jailed?

California is releasing 10’s of thousands only to see crime rise.

In many countries with a much more expansive application of the death penalty prison populations are much lower.

The number needs to go up. Too many perps on the street that should be in jail. Starting with Ismaaiyl Brinsley. 28 years old, 19 arrests, many of them for violent crimes. And he was out walking around. Should have been behind bars.

Also the number of Americans in prison may be misleading. Does it include illegals? The way pols parse words I'll bet it doesn't and the number is significant. Not big enough but significant.

The prison population is going up and down at the same time. Obama’s 1st accomplishment as President.
