President Obama re-enrolled in ObamaCare for the coming year in a symbolic gesture to show support for his namesake healthcare law.
Obama, a few days into his annual two-week Christmas vacation to Hawaii, renewed his cheaper bronze-level health insurance plan for 2015 through a Washington, D.C., exchange, a White House official said.
“As we said last year, the act of the President signing up for insurance coverage through the DC exchange is symbolic since the President’s health care will continue to be provided by the military,” the official said.
“But, he was pleased to participate in a plan as a show of support for these marketplaces which are providing quality, affordable health care options to millions of people. The President selected a bronze plan last year, and he remains on that plan," the official added.
A White House aide enrolled the president in an insurance plan last year. Obama and Vice President Biden and their immediate families receive healthcare through the White House Medical Unit.
As of Dec. 19, 4.5 million people had renewed their health insurance plans and another 1.9 million new customers had signed up for insurance through the federal marketplace, the Department of Health and Human Services announced earlier in the day. Those numbers do not include states that operate their own exchanges.
Officials hope to see 9.1 million sign-ups by February, revised down from 13 million.
