Family responsibilities explains some of it. Inertia explains a bit more. This is an ongoing shift that has been going on for decades and will go on for more decades. NYC is also full of resources for immigrants both legal and illegal.

I have a nephew who graduated law school UCLA, passed the bar, and has been trying to find a job in corporate law in California.... no luck.

He came to NY and passed the bar here too. He finally got a job doing bankruptcy law.

He quit working for the firm after two years and decided to try his luck back home in California. It’s been over 10 months and he’s still looking....

California may have good weather (Along the Coast)but has a very onerous cost of living, tax and regulatory environment. Businesses and middle income people have been fleeing California for decades. Any population increases they experience are mostly low income and migrant workers.
