John Nichols: It is time to apply the rule of law to Dick Cheney (barf alert)

Arizona Sen. John McCain, who during his time as a prisoner of war came to know something about the abuse of incarcerated combatants, provided the soundest assessment of the revelation that the United States abandoned its values and international standards in order to permit practices that the world knows as torture.

“We gave up much in the expectation that torture would make us safer,” McCain said after the release of details from the Senate Select Intelligence Committee on Central Intelligence Agency abuses. “Too much.”

McCain's calculation raises a question: If the United States has given up too much moral territory, what might be done now to regain the high ground? Surely, President Obama's curtailing of the worst practices was a start, as are the protocols that have been developed to guard against future abuses.

The Vice President only has two Constitutionally specified duties: to preside over the Senate and to take over as President should the President no longer be capable of exercising the duties of the office.

Cheney was never in the chain of command, was only in an advisory capacity and could never issue an order. Idiots like this writer seem incapable of seeing the irony in their “rule of law” calls for him to be tried.

I have come to a conclusion,

Enhanced Interrogation is what you do to criminal combatants (attacking civilians, no uniform, human shields) that includes everything up to physical discomfort outside physical injury.

Torture is anything done either to extract secrets from lawful combatants, sheer malice / entertainment, public display for propaganda, or causing physical injury.

I think that Bush Justice Department had it right.

Hey, let’s eliminate extracting intelligence. Who needs it when we can go forward boldly on cluelessness and stupidity?

"criminal combatants"

Yes, we are "torturing" i.e. roughing up human slime who cut the heads off children and stone women. Gee, we're sorry for making these pieces of s..t uncomfortable. Nichols is one of the most obnoxious leftists in the country. The rotten aroma he emits from Madison is something I can smell one hundred and some miles away. (snicker)

A Vice-President has no authority other than to be President pro-tem of the Senate.

I know that McLain has ridden that “tortured hero” horse during his entire political career. However, the film footage I’ve seen via TV of him in captivity and of his arrival back in US hands did not indicate ANY torture results.

Instead, they indicated injuries he suffered after trashing his fifth USN aircraft (#5 shot down; #1-4 were not) and then being beaten by local citizens.

McCain was treated well by his captors because he was the son of a US Admiral at the time and was offered early release. ....The man is dispicable and his claims that enhanced interrogation equates to torture is pure BS!

I did read the whole article and found the comments there to be a weird mix, with some saying EIT is torture and others saying it is not. ...Regardless, the author is pushing the progressive agenda.
