“That is why so many of the decent people in those neighborhoods refuse to help the cops find the murderers.”
I think a lot of decent people CAN’T help the cops, because decent people steer clear of the thugs and so don’t see what’s going on and don’t have much evidence to offer. And some of the bad guys who want the murders solved and would kind of like to work with the cops, are less scared of their violent “friends” than they are of mom or grandma discovering they’ve been hanging out with murderers!
Plus most murders happen in the dark or otherwise out of sight. Michael Brown died in an unusually public way, and there were a LOT of people who testified supporting Darren Wilson. Some of them said they were scared (it’s quite possible one of them was the guy who was killed during one of the riots after the GJ documents were released), and some of them were clearly no fans of the police and didn’t think Wilson should have killed Brown, but they still stepped up and did what was right.
Admittedly, they did have an extra level of protection because Grand Jury trials are private. I suspect that is one reason liberals want to eliminate Grand Juries — much easier to find the truth in those neighborhoods when people can speak up without being identified than it is when speaking up immediately puts a target on your back.
And some people in those neighborhoods just don’t understand how the law works. From their perspective, they “do their part” by sending in an anonymous tip (”so-and-so murdered him because of thus-and-such”), then the cops don’t do their part by arresting the guy. They don’t understand that cops have to collect enough evidence to prove the case, or what constitutes sound evidence, so they think the cops “aren’t doing their job” even when they “tried to help.”
Ignorance is as much a problem as hatred is, I suspect.
