Bess Myerson, a New York favorite daughter who basked in the public eye for decades as Miss America 1945, as a television personality, as a force in public affairs and finally, under a harsher light, as a player in a shattering municipal scandal died on Dec. 14 at her home in Santa Monica, Calif., her death occurring in the relative obscurity in which she had lived her last years. She was 90.
Her death, which had not been publicly announced, was confirmed on Monday by public records.
Ms. Myerson was one of a select group of American figures to parlay pop culture celebrity into positions of influence in the public square. She led two New York City agencies, Consumer and Cultural Affairs; advised three presidents; championed social causes; and supported powerful political careers. She also sought one for herself, entering a much-watched primary race for the United States Senate. For a long time she seemed rarely out of the news.

Donna Douglas, Bess Meyerson, Stuart Scott..................
I can remember watching her, Henry Morgan, Betsy Palmer and I think, Bill Cullen on that TV show.
I never knew why any of them were supposedly famous but they all impressed me as being pretty smart.
I also learned to ask, “Is it larger than a breadbox” and I had no idea how large a bread box was. Also “Is it anmimal, vegetable or mineral”?

RIP Bess Myerson.
People had bread boxes when there were no refrigerators, and it wouldn't make sense to put bread in the ice box. When I was a kid in New York, we had an ice box. And yes, when the slab of ice keeping it cold was melted, a man and his son would come to deliver a new one. The Ice Man cameth.
No mention of her being Ed Koch’s facial hair?
The bread box in my kitchen is 12” x 15” x 24” approximately. Enough to hold two plus standard size loaves of bread.
FWIW. Refrigerating bread is a sacrilege around here.
From the article:
“In 1977, she campaigned for Representative Edward I. Koch in his successful race for mayor, her picture often appearing on his posters. Walking hand in hand with him, she did nothing to dismiss speculation that marriage might be in their future while helping to dispel insinuations that Mr. Koch, a bachelor, was gay.”
Myerson was also famous for being unable to open a refrigerator door on a live refrigerator commercial. But it wasn’t Myerson (who was the regular spokesperson) but another woman, whose name I can’t recall. I’m sure google or bing will turn it up.
I always thought Burt Convy was the worst. Maybe it was the perm that bothered me so much.
IIRC, Bill Cullen played Superman on radio.
Scandal....
“It all ended in a public implosion, a conflict-of-interest scandal involving a married sewage contractor who did business with the city and his bitter public divorce. It led to bribery allegations, indictments and sullied reputations all around, and it left Ms. Myerson less likely to be admired than to be pitied.”
Then it may have been a scandal, today it is just another ho hum story near the back of the rag behind the obituary section.
Judging from her horrified expression and pursed lips, even the most committed liberal stooge much have their limit!
Betty Furness?

My grandma had an ice box, but by the time I came along, the ice box was in the basement being used for storage. No ice anymore.
On old episodes of The Honeymooners, you can see the ice box in the kitchen.
...though Wikipedia says it was a sub fridge opener, “June Graham.”
Betty Furness or Faye Emerson, probably.
