Atheists urge lawmakers to reject Bible for swearing-in ceremonies

The Secular Coalition for America asked members of Congress to reject using religious texts such as the Bible or Torah to swear into office Tuesday, urging them to instead use the Constitution — or nothing at all.

“By taking the oath of office on the Constitution, senators will demonstrate their commitment to our secular government, the laws that they’re affirming to uphold, and the people they were elected to represent,” said the coalition, which bills itself as a group of atheists, agnostics and humanists who are fighting against religious influences in politics.

All members of the House and more than a third of the Senate are due to be sworn in on Tuesday, officially opening the 114th Congress.

Some will carry their own religious texts with them for their official swearing in en masse on the chamber floors, and then repair to ornate rooms off the floor where they will have ceremonial do-overs which their family and friends are invited to join.

Each chamber provides copies of religious texts that the lawmakers can hold for the ceremonial swearing-in, and the growing diversity has spawned new options. A lawmaker was sworn in on a Koran for the first time in 2007, and last year the Hindu Bhagavad-Gita was used for the first time, bringing the total to nine options for House lawmakers.

There is no requirement that a text be used, and many lawmakers will simply hold up their hand — particularly for the official swearing-in on the chamber floor. But most do choose to hold a text for the ceremonial swearing-in.

In other words I think we can IGNORE them.

Giving them attention is like giving Al Sharpton the power to speak for all black people.

If they are really athiests then they wouldn’t care. An objective look will make one determine people who call themselves Christians are on average some of the best citizens around. Christianity should be encouraged.
Instead these people really hate God, and therefore want to try to get rid of Him in any way possible.

The Constitution of the United States protects freedom of religion overall, to include freedom from religion. A single word, a subtle but extremely important difference.

The fools would probably be OK swearing in on “Audacity of Hope” or the Koran.

“secular government”?!?!?!

The Founding Fathers would not have accepted that.

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

~Joshua 24:15

A modern verse for today might be paraphrased:

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the fake scientists that bring you the beliefs of man-made global warming and the non-science of the notion of evolution, or the gods of the CNN,Socialists, and Democrats in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light

Good one!

I have a modified proclamation:

I hereby demand that all Atheist’s immediately STOP using the air, stop eating food, stop drinking water and immediately stop walking upon the ground as well, all these things were all created by God!

“I swear, So help me, me”

Or:

“I swear, So help me, random chance that has a worse than 1 in 10 to the 100,000th power against accidentally creating the simplest form of life”

The article says they would prefer no religious text for swearing in . I tend to agree.

And my point is that they will never get this choice. There is no choice between religious and non religious government. The only choice is between religious Christian government, and religious Islamic government.

This is the simple fact that most atheists cannot seem to grasp. There is a large chunk of the population that has a strong natural desire to believe in the supernatural, and no amount of arguing will dissuade them from it. Currently the only available choices for spirituality (apart from New Age/Ancient Paganism nonsense) is either Christianity or Islam.

Atheists are deathly afraid of challenging Islam, and so they won't. They only challenge Christianity. If they succeed in Driving it out of government, Islam will simply take it's place. (as is indeed happening now all over Europe.)

Atheists have unconsciously made a decision to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire. They are just so foolish that they don't realize this is what is happening.

If you haven't seen this video, you ought to watch it. Thinking people ought to appreciate the scientific method articulated therein.

Atheists sure are worried about other people believing in an “imaginary” G-d.

They aren't worried nearly enough about other people believing in an imaginary "Allah." It is from that direction that they greater danger lies.

The Constitution of the United States protects freedom of religion overall, to include freedom from religion. A single word, a subtle but extremely important difference.

The constitution has an inherent Christian bias built into it. That it would be so was not remarkable to the men who created it. Their stipulations about no religious test for office had less to do with tolerance of other religions than it did for tolerance of other Christian Denominations.

In 1787, some states had their own official state religion, and knowing what they did of the religious wars in Europe, the founders wisely realized that emphasizing one denomination over another was a sure fire way to blow apart the Union, but by making it absolutely clear that no one would be excluded on the basis of whatever version of Christianity was popular in their state, they secured the consent for the new government from the citizens of those states who saw this as a reasonable compromise.

Probably Jefferson (not a member of the convention) was the only one who contemplated tolerating Muslims in this whole concept.

In the context of the Period, the founders used the word "Religion" as we would nowadays use the word "Denomination." That the nation would be vastly dominated by various forms of Christianity was to them, an assumed given.

It has always been so until comparatively recently. (last 60 years.)

I’d love to see these cowardly, low life, hateful atheists start targeting Mooooooslims....and with the same zeal and hatred that they do so target Christians...I’d love it...but don’t expect it from the cowardly pukes.

Even atheists know allah is not G-d.

Even so, if you take them at their word, they ought to oppose that religion as much as any other, but their actions put the lie to that notion.

They simply will not speak or do ill regarding the religion of Islam. They only want to pick on people whom they know will not fight back. And yet, the greatest threat to them will be Islam filling up the vacuum that the Atheists are insistent upon creating.
