Record-low gas prices across the U.S. have given rise to fresh talk in Washington of raising the federal gas tax for the first time in over 20 years, with leading Republicans now saying a hike must not be ruled out.

When both Democrats and Republicans agree that the solution to a problem is to raise taxes, then what have we?

We know the GOPe and Democrats both hate what is known as the "Tea Party." But there is no such thing as the "Tea Party." If, and this is a big if, it were coupled with a permanent opening of all federal lands, offshore and on shore, to exploration and development with no minimal requirement for environmental review, then it might be palatable.
