The Obama administration joined a lawsuit opposing the Washington Redskins‘ team trademark on Friday, filing court papers to defend the federal law that gives the government the power to deny recognition to trademarks it believes to be disparaging.
The Patent and Trademark Office’s appeals board had revoked the NFL team’s trademarks last year, finding that they were offensive and so they weren’t protected under federal law. The Justice Department said it agrees with them, and will fight a lawsuit by the team’s owners seeking to overturn the federal Lanham Act as a violation of free speech.

Would denying REDSKINS Trademark require the REDSKINS team to change it’s name?
Or would that just mean that anyone could use REDSKINS for hats, shirts, etc. (Which is a lot of liscensing $)

Lawsuit coming from the Just-us Dept. of the man who stayed at the Hilton SQUAW Peak Resort while in Phoenix earlier this week. Squaw being an offensive name for American Indian women.
Squaw Peak was renamed Piestewa Peak by former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano
From Wikipesia: “Piestewa Peak is named in honor of Army Spc. Lori Ann Piestewa, the first known Native American woman to die in combat in the U.S. military,[5] and the first female soldier to be killed in action in the 2003 Iraq War.”
Funny, that with all the resorts and top tier hotels in Phoenix, the White Hut picked Squaw Peak (originally Squaw Tit Mountain) Resort.
