This is definitely a classes versus the masses thing. After Pearl Harbor we had FDR's “Day that will live in infamy’ speech. After 9-11 we had George Bush ‘Islam is a religion of peace’ speech. Part of this is that the political class and the leadership groups genuinely disdain and fear not the underclass, who they can always get favorable media treatment by emoting over, but the middle class core of the nation. How this has happened I don't really know. I just know that the near hatred of normal mostly white middle class America is real and has become a big part of the world view of the elites in the last 50 years. Viet Nam had something to do with it making self destructive and hatefilled nihilism chic and normal middle class virtues not just boring and square but the equivalent of Nazism. What we now have are leadership groups that are alienated from the core of the nation and its historical roots and who have no sense of fellow feeling for the bulk of Americans but who embrace whatever foolish fad comes along. This is why the classes want Americans disarmed and are convulsed with rage over the fact that it is a virtual impossibility to do. The common phrase by Upper East Side types is ‘something has to be done about all those d*mned guns’ means ‘I hate and fear normal regular middle class Americans. Those b*stards actually believe in something and that is more dangerous than all the jihadists put together.’I don't know where this will end but I am convinced that even if the US were directly under attack by a really powerful alliance of foreign states the elites would sniffily ‘opt out’ as much as they could and feel normal Americans were some how to blame.
