The president of the Navajo Nation was sworn in Tuesday to continue as the tribes top leadereven though he badly lost his re-election bid.
Thats because the presidency of the countrys largest American Indian reservation is in limbo over an election that hasnt been scheduled. As a result, (Ben) Shelly will remain president as part of a deal he struck with lawmakers until the mess gets sorted out.

Navajo is the largest blanket butt tribe?
Sheah right...
Are they “Redskins” or Democrats? /s
It would be helpful if you would be more respectful of the Navajo.
I have known many members and they have all been solid, patriotic citizens. The tribe seems to assimilate into mainstream America quite well.
Look up the Navajo code-talkers who fought with us in WWII. Those men earned the eternal respect and gratitude of every American for all Navajo.
What have you done for your country lately? Other than insult a valuable and brave group who put their asses on the line to help the country that had taken a lot from them.
ATTABOY...Navajo’s can assimilate and/or go their own way at will...no biggie to those that know some of them. Fine Marines too.
More and more Im seeing this class BS from some FRs...grouping Indians, Hispanics, Blacks into niches...
There’s nothing like tribal politics, though.
Indians are Democrats. They like Free Stuff.
Not true. Every county in the Cherokee nation voted against Obama in 2008 and 2012. The reddest state in the nation is half Indian.
Out of all the tribes I've encountered I've enjoyed the Navajo people a great deal. I really like them. You should try to meet a few of them some time, they are a very warm and welcoming people.
No wonder people think FR is full of racists.
You guys are pathetic.
Why the racial slur?
People might think you can’t distinguish between an American tribe an muslim tribes
I was at a Navajo rodeo in Tuba City last July, and before they started the Star Spangled Banner was played and everyone turned toward the flag and placed their hand over their heart. Not even our first family does that anymore.
Obama is taking notes...
That’s a beautiful story. If anyone has a true reason to feel bitter about this country it’s American Indians. The fact that most of them do not is truly touching.
Well...Dave.
How many Navajo do you meet in Oregon?
Of the 300K tribe members, how many are gainfully employed?
Tid bit, I rarely claim: I am part Cherokee. Not on the rolls. Nephews and nieces are though and two are on scholarship from the Cherokee Nation.
Also, part Blackfoot, again, not on the rolls.
I’d run out of fingers and toes counting Indians I know from the Pawnee, Osage, Cherokee, Shawnee, Potawatomi, Kikapoo, Muscogee, Ponca and other tribe members from Oklahoma.
BTW, the blanket butt thing is an old joke but dissimilar from Redskin?
Did I say I’m from Oklahoma? Tahlequah specifically and love to fish in a place called 14 mile creek down from the water tower and you’d have to be from there to know where that place is. Guess what town that is near and then look for a place called “Lost City”.
Any guesses what the word Oklahoma means?
and what does that word mean?
I think I only met one from the Navajo but, know more than I can count of the tribes in Oklahoma and they’re all pretty nice people.
But, the Navajo are not the largest tribe.
Guess I won’t use that term again...
It’s interesting in the valley and all around Arizona, there are so many different tribes. My wife is part Indian as well so she gets a big kick out of dressing the part some times. She can pull it off and it gets attention at times.
Once we went to the state museum in Prescott. It was a collection of colonial log cabins and exhibits. My wife had done up her hair in long, long black pony tails down either side and wore a black leather hat and jacket.
We walked into one exhibit with manequin so. It was settlers trading with the Indians and there was a squaw depicted like “Pocahontas”, far prettier than you’d expect to find in the wild. She had the twin pony tails as well. My wife walked up and looked at the exhibit taking in the scene as I walked over.
As I approached, we noticed a little girl with blond hair staring at my wife. Then alternately staring at the Indian in the exhibit and back at my wife. This goes on in silence for a few long moments until my wife smiles, raises her hand Palm out and goes “HOW”...
The little girls eyes light up and she walks over to her dad saying “daddy! Daddy look at the Indian!” Which was probably an uncomfortable situation for him and he took her hand and lead her off.
We could to stop laughing...
Fascinating how many tribes, bands and clans there are.
If you get a chance go to their tribal chambers.
Beautiful stories and equally beautiful people.
One of the best was Osage Nation.
Martha Moore was the 1st Miss Indian USA and we worked together.
Stunning woman, extraordinarily smart and a wicked sense of humor.
Bill Cosby and Wayne Newton called our office frequently. 1st couple times everyone was starstruck after a while I took to telling her “Hey. Yer Dad is looking for you”.
She married some hotshot lawyer by the of Barker. Don’t recall his last name.
But seriously, go to one of their Council Chambers.
I’ll bet the Navajo have a stunning story in theirs.
If you find yourself in Tulsa make it to the Philbrook and see one of the largest collections of American Indian art.
The Gilcrease is also a great resource but, definitely the Philbrook.
Cool! I will have to check this out - thank you!
