Its only a matter of time when flocks of lethal drones will be launched by distant submarines and directed to target via satellite guidance by a geek with a joy stick thousands of miles away. The era of surface warships is over.
Somehow I get the picture of two ironclads and a canoe when I start reading explanations like this.

You’d agree that the era of stealth submarine stand off weapon is extant and in need of continued improvement. The drone thing is disturbing when coupled with the sensor apparati that are being developed. The rise of the machines, from satellites. Brute Russian force and sheer numbers could still overcome. The littoral warfare focus is also pertinent in terms of conflicts.
Scary stuff all this. I’d say the carriers are quite vulnerable absent the huge area of protection. That didn’t stop the USS Cole being attacked by a rubber boat because the security of the vessel was at best minimal- because of “nicey nicey” in port crap. It is a war vessel- repel all boarders.

The U.S. Navy is already procuring E-2D Hawkeye aircraft. It would be easy to also procure C-2D Greyhounds with a common cockpit, common engines, common propellers, and common logistics chain.
I live across the Potomac from dahlgren which is where they fire that rail gun. The sound is amazing.
