TARGET Closing all stores in Canada

Target says it plans to discontinue all operations in Canada and seek protection from creditors, less than two years after opening to much fanfare.

In a release early Thursday, the U.S. retail chain said it will close all its locations in Canada. There are 133 stores across the country with about 17,600 employees.

The company launched in Canada in the spring of 2013.

But after high expectations, the chain failed to deliver as customers faced higher-than-expected prices, and empty shelves as the retailer had problems with its distribution chain.

Executives repeatedly promised they would get it right, but ultimately decided to pull the plug.

"After a thorough review of our Canadian performance and careful consideration of the implications of all options, we were unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021," CEO Brian Cornell said in a release Thursday, explaining the justification for the shutdown.

Finally, frankly, Canadians do not like Americans and American things. They simply don't. They do not like you. Period. No matter what you think is going on, no matter about your "friend in Montreal," they do not like you.

A bit harsh and not true of all Canucks. But a lot of them are smarmy arrogant dweebs who look down their collective moocher noses at us. It's probably compensation for the fact that without us they'd have about 10% of the prosperity they enjoy now. America's Toupee.

When the Target near me first opened, I used to shop there regularly. IT was closer than Walmart, didn’t have stuff falling off the shelves and blocking the floor, and the quality of goods was better.

Then a few years ago they remodeled. From that point on, the store went down hill rather quickly. Merchandise seemed shoddier, basic things like socks and underwear weren’t available in all sizes (2 packs of small & one of XXLarge and nothing in sizes most people wear). Shelves empty the week before Christmas.

I’ll probably still go back for my paper goods, but that’s it.

That's why McDonald's made a point of putting the Maple Leaf on their logo.

There’s a lot more to McDs Canada than the maple leaf. The Canadian operation is a Canadian-owned company that pays royalties; their founder bought franchise rights for all of Canada. McDonald’s in Russia is owned by McDonald’s Canada.

Did not know that.

When I go to Canada though, I go to Tim Horton’s.

Canadians like American stores, they just like them better in the US. Since Plattsburgh, NY is less than an hour away from Montreal, I would imagine the Montrealers would rather go to the Target in Plattsburgh and forgo the GST. I get a kick out of the Quebecers pulling the price tags off their recent clothing purchases and then packing them into suitcases for the trip back across the border.

All three stores are in a stone’s throw from each other in my area. I shop the ones who have the items I need and have the best deal. I am, however judicious as to when I visit Walmart. Since this location is open 24 hrs, I go very early or very late. I won’t go near it on weekends. It’s an insane 3rd world bazaar.

Could simply be a cultural connection to the Brits. Cowboys and Yanks are so uncouth.

I went in a Radio Shack about 8 years ago and bought a mic mixer. I’m still using it.

The problem you had with Walmart is most likely local or maybe regional. It could be lousy management, too. The Texas Walmart stores in my area are fine - large, clean, well stocked, good prices, friendly staff. I shop at Target, too, though I usually find myself at Walmart for the best price.

“Went into a Walmart and had the misfortune of having to try something on. “

You are doubtless correct about clothing. But I shop so infrequently for clothing I can’t recall when I last did it. I probably have enough to last me until I die.

Incidentally, apropos of nothing in particular, I recently had to do work in two different closets in my rentals. Both homes are occupied by people on some form of financial assistance. Both walk-in closets were so stuffed there was no possibility of walking in. I had to spend half the time unloading the closets just to access what I needed to work on. I’m still amazed. The clothing must have cost thousands of dollars.

I stopped going to Target when they made themselves a free-fire zone.
Radio Shack changed the batteries in my garage door openers, so I’m worried about how I’ll get into my house now ...

Canadians use dollars but buy gas in kilos, eh? Huh? Yeah?
Their steering wheel is on the right side, isn’t it? And I believe they drive on the right side of the road.

But they’re definitely odd in many ways. Like the Brits they use too many vowels in words and can’t really say “about” with a clear rock and roll “Owwww!”: It’s “aboot”.
American dogs: `Bow wow wow!’ Canadian hounds: “Boo woo woo!”
They seem reticent as well—as if cowed by us, like the Brits—ending many declarative statements with, “eh?” like the English and their ending “yeah? yeah?”.
A fawning sort of: “Is that OK with you, eh? Yeah?
No. It isn’t.
They’ve got their own problems with Quebec, a country that does’t want to be Canada. It may be time to try another invasion ...

Anyway, I just can’t understand why they don’t adore us Americans as much as we admire ourselves.

I don’t shop at Walmart or Target. I won’t sniff at them but I just don’t like either store.
Occasionally I will order a larger item online at Walmart and have it shipped or pick it up (in and out). But I have found that most of that stuff is actually on Walmart’s website but doesn’t actually come from Walmart. I ordered a $200 electric blanket marked down to $90 for use on our sailboat that came yesterday. It was shipped from Dealyard.

LOL, I lived in VT in the late 70’s (beginning of the end for me and the state) and I picked up saying, “eh?’ and I find it apropos at times. Hearing abote it is kind of hockey speaking for me so I like that, too, but the way the emphasis is in their speaking sounds Irish or something and is disconcerting. Kind of like the southern sweet accent when the words are slicing you to pieces.

I live in California where Walmarts are part of the third world. I visit Siloam Springs Arkansas twice a year because of family and travel within an hour all around it. Every single Walmart store in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma that I have been in are great and I don’t mind going there.
I don’t shop at Walmart here.

That was my exact thought! That is a lot of stores to open in less than 2 years. In the US it takes 6 months to a year just to get a permit to build.

The cost to get 133 stores open that fast had to be astronomical....
