A multi-unit suspect manhunt is ongoing in Polk County after an armed robbery Thursday afternoon led to a chase and the discovery of two apparent murder victims in a Haines City home.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, two armed and dangerous suspects remain at large.
A search for the suspects is ongoing and residents in the Chanler Ridge community have been asked to stay in their homes and lock their doors. Meanwhile, some residents that tried to come home later have been kept out of their neighborhood since Thursday afternoon.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said that two of four suspects have been arrested in connection with a robbery in Auburndale, which occurred at a Cash America Pawn on Havendale Boulevard around 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
Police then determined that four black men fled east on U.S. 1792 in a burgundy GMC Jimmy. A Haines City police officer spotted the vehicle and began a pursuit.
That's when police officers said the men shot at the patrol vehicle and shot out their own back window in the process. Other officers joined in the pursuit before the suspects' vehicle crashed in the Chanler Ridge community, west of U.S. 27 and north of U.S. 1792 in Haines City.
Officials said four suspects ran, but one suspect was caught by a sheriff's K-9 and immediately taken into custody.
Shortly after, law enforcement received information from a resident that a house nearby had suspicious activity.
Deputies and officers surrounded the house.
A blue car burst out of the garage traveling straight at the deputies and officers. Law enforcement started shooting at the car before it went airborne and crashed. The suspect was shot and bitten by a K-9 before being taken into custody. His injuries are non-life threatening.
Deputies discovered two adults were murdered inside the home, but their relation, if any, is unknown to the suspect and under investigation.
"While we were conducting the investigation, we have now found two deceased adults in the house in which the vehicle burst from," Judd said Thursday. "We have that under investigation by our homicide unit."
Authorities have not released the names of the victims or the two suspects apprehended.
"We anticipate that they are scared, they are armed," Judd said. "They have already demonstrated (a proclivity) to kill people and shoot at law enforcement. We're not taking any risks.
"If they pull guns at us, make no mistake about it, we will shoot them. A lot."
Second, notice how cowed the people are in this community. There are other stories about people having to wait up to 3 hours to get back to their homes, because the police have checkpoints setup outside a specific neighborhood. This would piss me right the Hell off.
Finally, if more people were armed, trained to defend themselves in their own homes, and not afraid to use those arms when the bad guys show up, there likely wouldn't be two dead homeowners. I don't live in Polk, but this is close enough to hit home for me. I would never respond to noises in my home without being armed. Come what may, you may kill me, but you're not walking away unharmed.
So, lemme get this straight:
Four of Holder’s People
* knock over a pawn shop;
* engage in a running gunfight with the police;
* crash their ride and escape on foot, one of them getting caught;
* one of them gets run to ground after a daring escape attempt in which two civilians were executed for their car;
* and the remaining two Gibsmedats are still at large;
And we are seeing a Watertown-style lockdown where nobody is talking about it.
How’d I do?
You got it! My money is that the two gibsmedats aren’t even in the neighborhood anymore. The people who live there will never get an explanation.
Kudos to the K-9s that got a hold of the bastards. I hope Fido got some good bites on them.
Auburndale to Haines City...
They’re headed towards Disney?
That general area, yeah.
Three are now in custody, one on the run. Grady just had a long live news conference and showed the photos of the perps and they will be hitting the news sites in about 5 minutes. I believe they were all from Haines City and Lakeland. The pawn shop they robbed was between the cities. As far as the people in the neighborhood, 99 out of a 100 love our sheriff and are not upset about the manhunt.
Good to hear! I’ll keep my eyes on it...
‘..towards Disney’
Hope they aren’t planning on hitting Circus World.. they are sure going to be disappointed.
My retired sheriff friend on the HAM radio said they just caught the last one.
And then there were none.
My thoughts are with the executed couple.
They are double checking before they take down the perimeter. This is live radio feed. I’m only 5-6 miles away.
Good work, Doc!
We need to talk about the HAM setup, you and I...
Confirmed. All four in custody.
Channel 13 just had the video of the last suspect being taken into custody.
THANK you for keeping the cube-bound updated.
Soon as I can get back to the command shack, I’ll get more updates...
Just caught the Faux news alert in the break room.
Corrected to read the dead are a mother and daughter.
Sheriff Grady heard their screaming as the baboon executed them.
Photos of the four Gibsmedats, plus their victims, are now on national wires.
They must be giving their K-9s extra training down there ... the suspect was shot and then bitten by the K-9. But since the injuries are non-life threatening, I would have to say that the K-9 needs more time on the range.
Mother, daughter.
