Sequestration and massive budget cuts even before that was enacted have devastated the US Air Force and the military as a whole. Sequestration does not end until 2023.

The reason the Air Force tried to retire the fleet is because of these massive budget cuts. Eleven Air Force combat wings could not even afford jet fuel in 2013-2014. Thousand of DoD doctors and nurses quit in disgust after they were furloughed and had their pay cut. We went from 41 ready Army Combat Brigades to 2 who were even deployable. Navy ships and subs were scrapped because we could not afford the depot maintenance. Thousands of uniformed troops were given pink slips, some receiving them while deployed to combat zones.

The outcry from the American people, when the cuts were enacted, never happened.

To see the wails of "how could they think that?!" now ring hollow.

Instead of supporting our capability of this.....

....they demanded this.....

If an action is able to harm The United States this administration wants to do it.

EVERYTHING obama does either:

a) Weakens America/Americans
b) Distances America's allies
c) Strengthens America's enemies
d) Serves Islam
e) Harms Israel
Or some combination of the above.
I have yet to have anyone raise a single substantive counter example in several years of posting this.

There are no counter examples.

And the gubmint wants to eliminate the A-10? This aircraft has been and continues to be the best low altitude troop and tank buster to ever come along.

And unbelievably the powers that be want to retire this fine aircraft.

...Because it's too effective at killing Obama's buddies. We can't have that, can we?

Correct. And that is why things will not change for the better. The sheep love the chains of slavery now more that they love their freedom. What freedom[s] have I lost, they thunder. Don't waste your time explaining because they will not understand. But the biggest one is that we have from the viewpoint, gone from the presumption of innocence to the presumption of guilty. Under the guise of being made feel "secure" the sheep demanded that the Government take their freedom.

Now the sheep love their ET cards more than they love their freedom.

"I'm still free! I go where I please, I do as I please" the sheep bleat. So did the slaves in Rome as long as the masters approved.

Things will change here, but the change will be for the worse. Count on it!

A generals comment isn't policy.

Sadly, the USAF decided to retire the Hog because it is a single mission jet.

Simple.

The rationale, such as it is, is to retire single mission jets in favor of jets that are multi-mission capable.

Great idea in theory but a multi-mission jet is proof that a jet can be a jack of all trades but a master at none.

The A-10 is a master at CAS.

Budgets. Budgets. Budgets drive awful decisions sometimes, and USAF users of the A-10, from the pilots to the USAF guys on the ground (yes, the USAF has guys on the ground on the front lines in battle), they in no way want to retire the jet. . .it is the Wash DC acquisition geeks that argue for the multi-mission jet.

“The Air Force is simply not at all enthusiastic about the close air support mission.”

They are now. It is the acquisition geeks, the number crunchers that are looking at the numbers supporting multi-mission jets to replace a single-mission jet. . .in theory. In real life (and death), not so much.

As angry as I get watching the Obama administration refuse to acknowledge the Islamic nature of our enemy, it’s little different than how republican and conservative politicians and pundits refuse to openly acknowledge that Barack Obama is our first anti-American president. Not just functionally anti-American, but harboring a genuine contempt for this country and a desire to see it damaged as payback for perceived historic sins. This is what all Leftists believe, among a host of other miserable and malevolent beliefs (e.g hatred of Christians, seething resentment of whites, a barely concealed hope that the Jews of Israel will be liquidated by their neighbors, etc.)

Except for the fact the USAF were in the planning phase of retiring the Hog well before Gulf War I.

Not really. The F-15E comes to mind. . .it provides its own AI. The A-10 with its heaters can do the same. . .communicates with AWACS and knows the flow of the A/A fight.

Not hard at all. . .just busy. Even when you have air supremacy you always are thinking about and looking for airborne threats.

Though, now that I think about it, perhaps referring to Obama as “functionally anti-American” could be a first step for spineless republicans to start speaking the truth about the guy. They aren’t saying Obama hates America, they’re just pointing out that if we did have a president who hated America, he would have matched Obama’s actions one for one over the past 6 years.

“The idea is that because it can’t protect itself against front-line fighters, it always needs top cover. But don’t supersonic jet fighters doing CAS and strike missions in contested airspace have to have top cover, because it’s hard to focus on those missions and also defend yourself against enemy aircraft.”

After a few days of an air war, enemy air defenses, airports and aircraft are destroyed.

Our troops are deployed after establishing air supremacy. They can be closely supported by Warthogs and Apaches.

But I think it’s pretty cool that they are killing Muslims with a pig. ;-)

Very cool indeed, an attribute I had totally missed.

Many thanks.

The A-10 was always one of the Infantrymans greatest friends. It’s ability to provide close air support is unmatched by other aircraft in the inventory. I don’t understand any of the logic behind the effort to retire it.

My suggestion is to paint United States Army on the side of it and give it to the grunts that love it and need it. It can get low and slow and put ordinance where it is needed even when close to the good guys.

Try to make it a master of all and the cost per plane goes through the roof. The A-10's biggest asset is that it's cheap to buy and cheap to keep (although I would think it vulnerable to MANPAD type weapons).

True. . .but the Hogs low thermal engines make it hard for MANPADS to lock and hit, and when if it does, the Hog can keep flying.
