First you need to "dunk" them to find out if they are witches... ya see, the reason we burn witches is because they are made of wood... and as everyone knows, wood floats, so if they float while the dunking is underway, well, they... ahem... obviously, are witches...

Now, if they drown during dunking, hey at least we know they were not witches.
