Tesla P85D Destroys Dodge Challenger Hellcat On Dragstrip: Electric Car Thrashes 707-HP Hemi (Video)
Green Car Reports ^ | Jan 19, 2015 | John Voelcker

Say "P85D" to Tesla owners and fans, and you will see the drooling and twitching and heavy breathing and lustful stares--and more drooling--that Tesla's fastest, highest-performance electric car brings.

The same happens with the word "Hellcat" for fans of high-powered Hemi V-8 performance.

Now, courtesy of two owners--each convinced that their car is the fastest, baddest beast on the road--we know what happens when the two cars face off on the drag strip.

Two days ago at Palm Beach International Raceway, a Tesla Model S P85D and a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat competed in the traditional quarter-mile drag race.

Hint: It's no contest. At all. And the quieter car wins decisively.

...

And, now, can we please stop with the "wimpy electric golf car" stuff?

The BMW i8, which is both gasoline and battery powered, is my choice.

I have a 3 Series diesel now and I love it.If I had stretched myself a bit I could have gone with the 5 Series diesel instead. But there's something really cool about a car that gets 49 *actual* miles per gallon on the Interstate and can climb Mt Evans (Colorado) without missing a beat.

Sorry - but that wasn’t a real race & while the qtr time is not terrible - it should not have stood up to a 700 hp car unless the driver wanted to lose

“The Tesla has a motor for each wheel. Put a Hemi on each wheel and see what the Dodge can do! That’s a CAR, baby”

The Tesla has two motors, not four.

Sort of a non-test.

Rule Number One in drag racing: Once you hit the accelerator, do not let off and hit the brakes. If you jump the gun then they'll redo the heat or disqualify you.

I wonder if the Challenger just died or if it wad driver error?

They had to put a battery charger on the Tesla to get it back to the garage area after the race....

Only 82mph in the quarter? If you sunk the price difference between the two into the mopar you would be hitting close to 200 mph. I have a hard time believing the driver couldn’t do better with that much hp. My near stock diesel ram does better than that.

The p58D ran 11.6’s, but Dodge confirmed 10.9’s were attainable with the Hellcat in good air. This is quite possibly the worst driver I’ve ever seen at the drag strip.

The BMW i8 has a 3 cylinder gasoline engine rated at 231hp, along with an electric motor rated at 131hp.

The gasoline muscle car is dead.

I understand the 4 cylinder Ford Mustang of today absolutely blows away a 2005 Ford Mustang GT with the V8.

All with better gas mileage.

Trouble is - an eco-boost engine does not have that throaty V8 growl. So they synthesized it in to the exhaust noise.

The Dodge driver messed up on the start, burned rubber and got little traction. Need a do over.

Yea right, everybody needs a car that will accelerate the fast. How far can that P85D go on a charge?

The Tesla has 691 hp, basically the same as the Hellcat's 707. The difference is the off-the-line torque.

It' nonsense. A 700hp land rocket against a Osterblender car?

The driver of the Dodge was goofing around spinning his wheels all the way down the track. The battery car ran OK but not 700 horse worth.

Check the source.

I’m still driving a 1984 Mercedes 300D turbo diesel, which is probably heavier and definitely not in the same shape as that 5 series, but I still get 25mpg combined and haven’t sunk a dime into it in years.
